    This is a part-time temporary position (roughly 10 hours per week for a duration of 10 weeks), made possible by the Nebraska Library Internship Grant Program through the Nebraska Library Commission, meant to introduce a high school or college student to the varied and exciting work of Nebraska libraries.


    Essential Functions and Duties

    • Explore different functions of the library.
    • Perform a range of day-to day tasks of the library including but not limited to
      • Assisting patrons in finding materials they’re looking for in our physical collections.
      • Checking materials in and out at the circulation desk.
      • Keeping a daily tally of visitors and service usage for statistical reporting.
      • Assisting with keeping the library neat.
    • Help maintain the cozy, small city atmosphere by chatting with patrons appropriately.
    • Help with programs as time and interest allows.
    • Help to arrange collections and displays as time and interest allows.
    • Help to create promotional materials as time and interest allows.
    • Perform related duties and projects as assigned by the Library Director or as your own initiative and talents suggest.

    Skills and Abilities

    Required skills:

    • Must be at least 16 years of age.
    • Currently a high school or college student.
    • Never employed by a library nor an intern at a library (There are no restrictions about library volunteers).
    • Strong interest and desire to learn more about libraries.
    • Strong English communication skills to assist patrons who may have difficulty expressing themselves in person and on the telephone.
    • Ability to reach for books about two feet away from the inside of the circulation desk counter and handle them during check-out/check-in.

    Preferred skills:

    • User-level computer skills, e.g: document management, email, and data entry.
    • Emotional intelligence and ability to cope with situations such as when patrons having a difficult time emotionally, are in conflict with other patrons, or are living with a mental illness.
