    Pueblo City-County Library District is conducting a search for a Genealogy and Local History Librarian. The Genealogy and Local History Librarian creates a positive library experience for customers by providing expert reference services and assistance with using materials and resources in the Local History and Genealogy Department. This position is responsible for the organization, care and access to the Western Research and Genealogy collections and for developing programs and providing reference services that promote these specialized collections.

    The Genealogy and Local History Librarian reports to the Manager of the Local History and Genealogy department. The position works as a team member within the department, trains and works with volunteers and collaborates with staff throughout the Library District. The Librarian provides direct customer service and reference and instruction support for individuals and groups. The positions provides excellent customer service demonstrating the ability to communicate effectively with people regardless of age, race, sexual orientation, ability level or background.

    PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Provides reference and research assistance by helping customers locate materials, answer questions, place holds, complete forms, confer with other staff and make referrals to other organizations and agencies; instructs customers in the use of print and on-line materials, databases, equipment, and technologies.
    • In conjunction with the department Manager, the Librarian leads collection development and selection of circulating and non-circulating materials for the Wester Research and Genealogy collections.
    • Plans and conducts outreach and educational programs for the public which promote the use of Local History and Genealogy Department materials to enhance awareness and highlight library materials. May conduct tours.
    • Works with the department manager and archivist to develop and implement services to targeted communities; including but not limited to primary, secondary and post-secondary students, genealogy and history researchers, and cultural groups.
    • Provides instruction to customers in the use of print, manuscript, and online materials, databases, equipment, and technologies.
    • Provides reference assistance to library users and helps library patrons find resources.
    • Performs community outreach to genealogy societies and other community groups.
    • Works with the department manager to develop and implement relevant procedures based upon professional experience and best practices.
    • Develops and maintains print and electronic indices, and guides.
    • Assist department and library district staff in developing library/museum exhibits that highlight PCCLD collections.
    • Initialize and contribute to special projects relating to local history and genealogy.
    • May process archival collections.
    • May collaborate with researchers on special projects related to local history. May write and publish significant findings on behalf of PCCLD.
    • Researches questions using a variety of formats for information (print, microform, and electronic resources).
    • Assists in training of other employees and volunteers for specific tasks.
    • Works the Local History and Genealogy desks as scheduled; explains library regulations and procedures, and resolves basic patron complaints.
    • This position will be assigned the role of Person in Charge (PIC) at the Rawlings Library on a regular basis to respond to any escalated customer service, emergency, or security issues and will work closely with the security officer on duty.
    • Supports team efforts to maintain a safe and secure environment for customers and staff by maintaining awareness of surroundings and working in accordance with safety policies and procedures.
    • Participates in regularly scheduled department meetings. Attends All Staff Development Days and other training sessions to acquire new skills and to stay current on all information that is pertinent to PCCLD.
    • Reads daily organizational communications from intranet, e-mail, newsletters and print announcements. Stays current on all library services, programs and events throughout the district. Regularly accesses electronic time keeping, payroll and personnel employee access systems.

    OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Cross trains and provides back-up coverage for the Manager of Local History and Genealogy.
    • May supervise and coordinate the work of others for special projects as assigned by the supervisor.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and Experience: A Masters Degree in Library Science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association and two (2) years of related work experience is required. Knowledge of local history and genealogy is preferred. Experience working in a public library setting is desirable.

    Skills and Abilities:

    • Knowledge of local history and use of genealogical resources.
    • Skill in synthesizing multiple data sources to analyze collection needs.
    • Proven skills in project management.
    • Knowledge of American Southwest history and Hispanic genealogy is preferred.
    • Proficiency in the use of print and electronic reference tools and research techniques with a demonstrated passion for working with library customers on local history.
    • Knowledge and experience utilizing best practices in archival preservation.
    • Demonstrated creativity in developing programs.
    • Ability to conduct complex reference interviews, to analyze requests and to apply research skills to locate
    • specialized information or provide customers with alternative sources.
    • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds, age, race, sexual
    • orientation and ability levels.
    • Strong presentation and instruction skills.
    • Ability to function under flexible and changing conditions.
    • Strong computer skills including the ability to teach others to use e-resources and devices.

    Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds and push /pull a fully loaded book cart weighing up to 200 pounds.

    Other Requirements: Must be able to work a flexible schedule including days, evenings and weekends.
    Must submit to and successfully pass a criminal background investigation.

    Hiring Salary: $55,000 annual; $2,155.38 bi-weekly

    Salary Range: $52,765.96-$71,234.04

    Benefits: PCCLD offers health insurance including a tele-health service, dental and vision insurance, HSA and FSA plans, employer paid life insurance, and 401(k) and PERA retirement plans. The library district provides paid leave in the form of 11 paid holidays, vacation, sick and personal paid time off. Some positions may qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.
