    WAYNE COUNTY JOB DESCRIPTION for
    LIBRARY DEPARTMENT

    GENERAL WORK FUNCTIONS
    Paraprofessional work in a branch or specialized unit of the main library. This position
    performs a variety of library circulation and clerical procedures using an automated library
    system.

    SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    Performs tasks at the circulation desk using an automated circulation system, including checking
    library books in and out, registering patrons for borrower’s cards, renewing materials, taking
    reserve requests, and telephoning reserves.

    Collects patron fines and fees for overdue and damaged items, and makes change as needed.

    Greets visitors to the library. Provides directional and other basic information regarding the use
    of library facilities, services and collections.

    Answers telephones and provides routine information, or refers and transfers calls.

    Provides readers’ advisory services and answers basic reference questions.

    Handles routine complaints and answers a variety of questions from patrons at the front desk.

    Contributes to the accomplishment of the Library’s vision, mission, and strategies as outlined in
    the Library’s Strategic Plan.

    Assists patrons with library equipment, such as computers, copiers, scanners, and self-checkout
    machines.

    Maintains records and provides monthly reports on statistics.

    Shelves library materials and maintains collection in proper order; displays materials, and
    retrieves specifically requested materials.

    Trains staff in circulation functions as needed.

    Participates in collection maintenance projects.

    May be responsible for, or will assist with, planning, implementing, and promoting programs

    OUTREACH DEPARTMENT DUTIES:

    Manages Adult Outreach Services for the library to provide services to adults, especially
    seniors, who are homebound or in care institutions.

    Provides readers advisory services to library patrons.

    Represents the library on committees, boards and teams as required; works with outside
    organizations as necessary.

    Identifies, reviews, and selects materials for library patrons.

    CHILDREN’S DEPARTMENT DUTIES:

    In addition to the above circulation duties, performs simple reference interviews to best
    determine the needs of patrons.

    Helps patrons locate materials and information through the use of various resources.

    Assists patrons with computer use and the reservation system.

    Maintains positive relations with patrons, volunteers, and others in the community while
    providing a variety of services.

    In the absence of department supervisor, oversees student volunteers.

    Under the supervision of Children’s Dept. Supervisor, plans and conducts programming for
    children and their caretakers.

    Performs other duties as assigned.

    TECHNICAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT DUTIES:

    Verifies receipt of library materials, from both vendors and consortium.

    Processes library materials.

    Maintains and verifies a variety of departmental records, forms, and files.

    Delivers library courier service.

    Repairs and cleans library materials.

    Original and copy cataloging according to NC Cardinal best practices and established
    procedures.

    Packages materials for shipment throughout the consortium.

    May be required to assist at service desks during times the library is short-staffed.

    Performs related duties as required.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
    Ability to use independent judgment in applying library policies and procedures.

    Ability to learn and use the computerized library catalog system.

    Requires the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

    Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.

    Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under
    stress.

    Adept at giving and receiving feedback.

    Ability to analyze situations accurately and act effectively.

    Ability to work well as part of a team and maintain effective work relationships with co-workers,
    the general public, and partner agencies.

    Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers,
    copiers, and scanners.

    Ability to exert up to 35 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move
    objects, including but not limited to tubs of books and other library materials.

    Ability to climb, reach and/or stretch arms, legs or other parts of the body to grasp objects. Must
    be able to stand for extended periods of time.

    Children’s Library Assistants must also have knowledge of and interest in, children’s books and
    audiovisual materials. Must also have familiarity with basic computer troubleshooting.

    MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
    Minimum:
    Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university and related work experience. A
    Library Assistant in the Technical Services Dept. must pass both NC Cardinal item cataloging
    and bibliographic cataloging assessments shortly after start date.

    • Bilingual candidates are preferred.

    ** Must have access to transportation and maintain a valid N.C. Driver’s License with an
    acceptable driving record.

    MINIMUM STANDARDS REQUIRED
    TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, copiers,
    typewriters, calculators, recording machines, etc. Must be able to exert up to 40 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds
    of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of
    those for Sedentary Work. Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. However, if the use of arm
    and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is
    rated for Light Work.
    Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite
    characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
    Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes
    giving instructions, assignments or directions to subordinates or assistants.
    Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of records, forms and correspondence. Requires the ability to prepare forms,
    receipts, and correspondence, using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style.
    Requires the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control and confidence.
    Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables
    in situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in oral, written, diagrammatic or
    schedule form.
    Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written
    instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including
    legal terminology.
    Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals
    and percentages.
    Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
    Motor Coordination: Requires the ability coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office equipment.
    Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as office equipment. Must have minimal levels of
    eye/hand/foot coordination.
    Color Discrimination: Does not require the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
    Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable
    to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.
