  • JOB SUMMARY
    The Director of Library Services is responsible for the planning, development, implementation, evaluation, overall management and maintenance of the library program, as well as the supervision of library staff. They are also responsible for coordinating all library, media, and information services, and for participation in department chair meetings by performing the following duties.
    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
    LEADER (25%)
    • Regularly attends High School leadership, Middle School leadership, curriculum, director, and other committee meetings as requested, actively contributing to cross-functional collaboration and decision making.
    • Actively advocates for and promotes library resources and services to the school community.
    • Leads the development and implementation of a comprehensive library strategic plan for P3-12 that is aligned with the school’s goals.
    • Shares expertise by presenting at elementary, middle, and high school faculty meetings and parent meetings.
    • Maintains regular and timely communication with Elementary School and Middle School High School Principal to ensure alignment with, and support of their educational priorities.
    • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with elementary, middle, and high school faculty and staff, fostering collaboration and support for library initiatives and student learning.
    • Participates in technology training and library services orientation and support for faculty (P3-12).
    • Actively participates in school improvement initiatives and accreditation activities, contributing to the school's continuous growth and development.
    • Organizes and conducts regular cadence library department meetings with library staff members, fostering collaboration, sharing updates, and enhancing team dynamics.
    • Continually evaluates the effectiveness of library services in relation to the school’s mission and the evolving needs of the school community, proactively developing plans to address those needs.
    • Supervises the maintenance and upkeep of library property, including equipment, books, and other resources, to ensure their proper care and functionality.
    • Ensures a welcoming and well-maintained environment for students and faculty.
    • Actively engages in professional organizations, such as HASL, ALA, AASL, AISL, and others, staying current with industry trends and best practices to enhance library services.
    INSTRUCTIONAL PARTNER/INFORMATION SPECIALIST TEACHER (50%)
    • Develops and maintains a productive working relationship with and provides research and reference support for students, faculty, and staff.
    • Develops and maintains a research and information literacy curriculum based on current best practices and aligned with the school’s current mission and needs.
    • Coordinates and conducts classes to model best instructional practices in research and library and information literacy concepts.
    • Coordinates and collaborates with teachers in implementing and instructing students in information literacy concepts, skills, and use of relevant technologies.
    • Curates and manages collections of resources, ensuring that materials are relevant and current to meet the educational needs of the school community.
    • Facilitates access to and use of library resources.
    • Collaborates with teachers to plan and support inquiry-based research in the curriculum.
    • Collaborates with teachers and others to plan and implement meaningful experiences that promote reading and lifelong learning.
    PROGRAM ADMINISTRATOR AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES (20%)
    • Provide leadership and guidance to library faculty and staff, ensuring effective program operations and fostering professional development.
    • Prepare and manage the annual budget, optimizing resource allocation for library services.
    • Oversees the development, maintenance, cataloging, and classification of the library's collections.
    • Oversees library management software and library’s online/digital presence.
    • Direct the administration, use and maintenance of library facilities, including class scheduling, openings, closings, and other event coordination.
    • Develops and updates the library's Collection Development Policy and handles challenges to library materials.
    • Develops, updates, and enforces library behavior policies for students, policies for the use of library resources, and circulation policies for students and faculty.
    • Supervise and support library staff, including the instructional Librarian, through training, performance monitoring, coaching, skills development, and timely performance evaluations.
    • Plays an active role in the recruitment, selection, and performance management of library staff, ensuring the acquisition and retention of qualified individuals to meet staffing needs and maintain an effective team.
    • Support cross-functional efforts and model core values to set an example for other team members.
    • Oversees print, equipment, and digital inventories.
    • Oversees library publications; i.e. handbook, etc.
    OTHER DUTIES (5%)
    • Provides student supervision during library operational hours.
    • Oversees faculty copy room (maintenance, troubleshooting for teachers, ordering of paper).

    • Participate in the development of a safe and healthy workplace.

    • Report any injury, hazard or illness immediately, to their Supervisor and Human Resources.
    • Not place others at risk by any act or omission, not willfully or recklessly interfere with safety equipment.
    • Act as a role model by demonstrating safe work behaviors.
    • Identify, assess if necessary, and control hazards within area of responsibility.
    • Ensure that equipment/supplies are properly maintained.
    • Maintain relevant knowledge of safety laws.
    • Mandatory reporting of sexual abuse to law enforcement or child protective services, and Human Resources. Sexual abuse includes child molestation, any actual or alleged illegal or otherwise wrongful sexual conduct with a minor, and serial sexual misconduct, any actual or alleged illegal or otherwise wrongful sexual conduct with more than one victim; and committed by or alleged to have been committed by any perpetrator who is not a student of an included entity.
    • Develop safe work procedures and ensure adherence to procedures.
    • Ensure compliance of safety policies and procedures.
    • Communicate safety issues with employees.
    • Ensure that employees are provided information, instruction, training and supervision that they need to work safely.
    • Ensure that employees are aware of and abide by all relevant safety procedures.
    • Encourage early reporting of incidents and forward information to Manager and Human Resources immediately.

    QUALIFICATIONS and/or EXPERIENCE
    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
    Requires master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLS) and five years’ experience as a school library media specialist and teaching experience or other equivalent experience in an educational setting. Must have ability to read, analyze and interpret general, technical and professional journals, write reports and prepare budgets. Also requires demonstrated knowledge and comfort with prevailing technologies and online resources. Prefer knowledge of spreadsheets, presentation graphics and databases. Must demonstrate a willingness to work with faculty and students and to develop a knowledge of the school community and curriculum.
    COMMUNICATION SKILLS
    Requires excellent verbal and written communication skills, with sensitivity to nonverbal communication, especially in adolescents. Must be able to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, teachers, staff, school constituents and the general public.
    PHYSICAL DEMANDS
    Our campus consists of multiple buildings on 34 hilly acres that requires frequent walking including uphill and stairs. The individual is required to talk and hear. often required to sit and use their hands and fingers, to handle or feel and to manipulate keys on a keyboard. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, and crouch. Vision abilities required include close vision.
