Library Services Director supervises, maintains, and enhances policies and procedures for a library. Oversees professional and support staff involved in cataloging, indexing, issuing books/materials, and keeping records of items on loan. Being a Library Services Director selects books and publications for purchase and subscribes to pertinent periodicals as allowed for by the given budget. Requires master's of library and information science from an ALA-accredited school. Additionally, Library Services Director typically reports to top management. The Library Services Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Library Services Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

    Performs difficult clerical and routine paraprofessional work assisting in the delivery of library services; performs related work as assigned.


    The position is based at the Southwest Regional Library, but candidate could be asked to work at other library locations. Work is performed under the supervision of the Adult Services Manager.


    Must be able to work a flexible schedule including two evenings per week and weekend shifts
    .


    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Support adult services functions by providing reference and reader’s advisory services for customers via phone, online chat, email and in person.
    • Assist with customer recommendations for items, as well as promote the use of library materials by creating book lists and book displays.
    • Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of library resources and equipment including an ability to train customers in the use of online catalog and online resources.
    • Interpret and enforce library policies and procedures to the public.
    • Provide excellent customer service in a team-based environment.
    • Work at the circulation and children’s information desks as part of cross-training.
    • Actively serve on system teams and committees, as assigned.


    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    • General knowledge of current library policies, procedures, and materials.
    • Knowledge of current and emerging technologies coupled with a working knowledge of both library computer systems and electronic resources and databases.
    • Skill with library technology
    • Sufficient keyboard experience to use automated systems effectively.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Strong written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to provide excellent customer service via phone, online chat, email, and in-person.
    • Ability to understand, interpret, and enforce library rules, policies and procedures.
    • Ability to work well independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
    • Ability to work pleasantly and effectively with people of all ages.
    • Ability to establish and maintain pleasant and effective working relationships with other employees and library patrons.
    • Ability to work with people with courtesy and tact in performing public contact duties.
    • Ability to use personal computers, word processing software and email.


    MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

    Any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate’s degree in library science or a related field and six months in general library experience.


    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Ability to speak Spanish
