Position Summary:
The Director of Library is responsible for providing the comprehensive vision for and leading the daily operation of the Baxter Library. Since the Baxter library is a central part of the campus and frequented by all members of the school community, a primary focus for this role is to create an active, engaging community space for students and faculty by offering programs and providing resources that support the academic curriculum and more broadly the mission of the school. One indicator of success as Director of Library will be that both students and faculty regularly utilize the library space and regard its programs as valuable resources and support.
Responsibilities:
Collaborate with the Dean of Studies and other members of the academic administration to implement the vision of the library as an academic resource appropriate to an all-boys college preparatory school.
Responsible for supervising library staff, including hiring, scheduling, performance management and all aspects of team management.
Select library materials and resources in differing formats and levels of difficulty which support the school’s curriculum and foster an appreciation of reading and scholarship.
Work with vendors updating print collections as well as the online database collections.
Coordinate book acquisitions for academic departments, academic awards program, speaker visits, summer reading program, as well as textbook collections for our reserve shelf.
Assist with student textbook returns to third-party vendors at the end of the year.
Manage acquisitions of print and digital materials and resources in order to keep materials up to date.
Maintain open memberships and communication with professional organizations necessary to the success and advancement of services provided by the library.
Work closely with the Business Office to set a working budget and manage all aspects of purchasing of material and managing special funds in keeping with their intended purposes; the Sidney C.Clark Fund, David Bowen Fund, and Friends of Theodate Collection
Work with teachers and learning center faculty to help monitor tests in the library for students who need to make up assessments or qualify for an extra-time accommodation.
Work with the IT department to manage the digital collection on the school’s website by updating links and platforms, as well as the technology in the library.
Assist administration with overseeing the school Archives department.
Oversee library building maintenance, security, and furnishings to keep the library updated, comfortable, clean, and secure.
Provide ongoing training related to library databases, library management system, procedures, and events.
Serve our students and families by providing a welcoming environment with relevant library programs, engaging displays, as well as hosting tutors and test monitoring for their academic success.
Provide targeted library instruction for faculty who bring their classrooms to the library to support the assigned research projects or general knowledge of the Baxter Library.
Member of the Academic Committee.
Flexible schedule according to the needs of the school.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
MLS desired.
Prior experience working in a library setting and familiar with all library operations.
Some relevant teaching experience; experience with integrating information literacy within the curriculum is preferred.
Experience and proficiency with technology, background with an automated library environment; proficiency with online databases and other digital resources.
Proven ability to manage budgets and supervise library staff.
Must be able to work collegially; must be committed to working in a diverse community and have the ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations within the school community.
Must enjoy being part of a community, collaborating, and working and connecting with students in a boarding school environment.
