    Qualifications

    Henry E. Eccles Library. Academically, the Library supports the U.S. Naval War College's NECHE-accredited Master of Arts degrees, research centers, and diverse educational programs, including those offering JPME Phase I and II credits. Under the military and government umbrella, the Library operates with oversight from the Department of the Navy, Defense, and the U.S. federal government, ensuring both restricted and public access to resources based on national security considerations. The Library's collection is specialized, focusing on graduate-level content relevant to national security and defense. Additionally, the Library is essential in bolstering the NWC's multiple research centers and U.S. Navy research needs.     Responsibilities. The Library Director at the NWC plays a multifaceted role. The Director reports to the Provost via the Associate Provost for Academic Services and will collaborate with senior leadership, ensuring the Library's goals align with the College's vision while fostering innovation, excellence, and a culture of continuous improvement. The Director manages personnel by promoting teamwork, overseeing recruitment, and emphasizing professional growth, diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Director handles budgetary concerns, manages the Main and Classified Library collections, and ensures operational excellence by integrating library functions with the broader NWC community and optimizing space and resources. The Director stays updated with industry trends, sharing insights with the NWC community; collaborates with academic departments; introduces student programs; and partners with similar institutions. Lastly, the Director leads outreach initiatives, building ties for resource sharing, promoting the Library's offerings, and establishing partnerships for mutual benefit.

    Qualifications. Qualified candidates must possess a PhD or EdD in the field of library science, history, military history, international relations, education, or a related field. The preferred candidate will also have a master's degree from an American Library Associate (ALA) accredited program and experience in supervising a sizeable team in an academic or research library. The Director should possess demonstrated experience to include: visionary leadership, fostering teamwork and inclusivity, understanding academic libraries roles, fiscal management, and effective communication skills. Candidates should also include experience in higher education or government, strategic planning, outreach and grant acquisition. A strong record of professional service, scholarly publishing or research is also desired.

    Candidates must be U.S. citizens capable of obtaining a Department of Defense security clearance at the SECRET level.


    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

    Qualified candidates must possess a PhD or EdD in the field of library science, history, military history, international relations, education, or a related field.

    Additional information

    Appointment. This appointment is governed by provisions of Section 8748, Title 10, U.S. Code as delegated by the Secretary of the Navy, and the regulations of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management which apply to "excepted" appointments under Schedule A. For the successful candidate, the initial term of appointment is expected to be three years in length with provision for renewal dependent on performance. This is not a remote work position; however, the incumbent may be eligible for situational telework as determined by policy and the position requirements. The incumbent may be expected to travel.

    Salary Considerations. Salary is competitive and is accompanied by a generous federal employee benefits package that includes health insurance with employer contribution, retirement savings plan, paid vacation and sick leave, and other benefits. Academic rank and salary are commensurate with experience and credentials in accordance with the Department of the Navy Faculty Schedule and NWC policy.
