Library Director
City of Battle Creek, Nebraska
Position Description: Library Director Reports to: Library Board & Department Head Governing Body
Payroll Status: Hourly, Full Time (40 hours) Supervises: Library Personnel
Basic Function: This person is responsible to provide a welcome, accessible and comprehensive public library that meets the needs of the community while ensuring that all library services are provided according to the policies set by the Library Board. Administrative functions related to the management of the library services include the budget, personnel, facilities, records, materials, and equipment. This person serves as a public representative is involved in presentations, fund raising, and developing/sustaining library programs that meet community, educational and patron needs.
Primary Skills and Duties:
Administration and Management:
- Thorough knowledge or willingness to learn current public library principles and practices including the ability to develop, analyze, and implement the library collection and program
- Ability to communicate and lead effectively to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the board, staff, partners, and the public
- Comfortability with current technology and the ability to adapt, implement and train on new products and systems
- Works with the Library Board to establish policies and implements them
- Oversee building repairs and grounds to assure a welcoming and safe facility
Budgeting and Financing:
- Demonstrates effective accounting principles and practices necessary to provide the board with the information needed to successfully oversee the library’s finances
- Creates an annual budget, prepares monthly financial reports, and presents the reports to the Library Board and the City Council
- Monitors, reviews, and approves all revenue and expenditures to maintain a sound budget and works closely with the City Manager on processing the budgeted monthly expenditures in a timely and organized manner
- Researches and prepares grant applications for other sources of funding that supplements and furthers the budget
Service Implementation and Creation:
- Ability to plan, organize and direct library services and activities by assessing the day-to-day needs of the community
- Stays informed on trends in library management and programs and networks with other libraries through the Madison County Libraries, Three River Library System, and Nebraska Library Commission
- Prepares, promotes, and executes the Summer Reading Program.
- Greets and serves patrons at the front desk and does other library duties when needed
Marketing and Community Engagement:
- Maintains the library’s social media accounts and webpage.
- Creates flyers, newspaper articles, and other means to promote library services to the community.
- Willingness to participate in presentations about library services as asked.
- Represents the library in community organizations and works cooperatively with them to promote the role of the library in the greater scope of the community.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or a combination of experience and training to effectively perform the essential functions of the job.
- Experience in managing personnel and volunteers including knowledge in personnel selection and training.
- Experience with technology and ability to learn new technology as it evolves.
- Availability to work Saturdays on a rotating basis.
- Must be able to perform physical demands of job including but not limited to lifting of boxes of up to 25lbs, light cleaning, and occasional snow removal.
Compensation:
This is a full time, 40 hour a week position with a hourly wage of $21, negotiable based on experience. Benefits to include city paid health insurance, holiday pay, vacation pay, sick leave, and a city matching SIMPLE IRA plan.
