I am responsible for planning, development, and implementation of service strategies to reach Adults/Teens/Children.
I ensure services meet community needs and are aligned with the Library’s strategic plan. I hire, train, supervise, lead, and oversee performance management for audience core staff.
I collaborate with other managers across the Library to provide approaches to consistent and exceptional service and operations.
Essential Functions, Responsibilities, Knowledge and Skills
- I hire, train, supervise and oversee performance management of core staff. I provide strategic direction, leadership, direct supervision, scheduling, training, mentorship and guidance for core employees. I ensure staff provide services which meet community needs and proactively plan for skill development among staff to meet those needs.
- I oversee day-to-day operations of the services for Teen’s at the Main Library.
- I set expectations and allocate assignments. I prioritize, direct, delegate, and monitor workflows and activities to ensure efficient and timely completion of assignments and goal achievement.
- I support front-line service staff through training, mentoring and direct supervision at service points. I demonstrate how to apply best practices and provide excellence in deep reference services, various media and communication tools, referrals, readers' advisory, information access, and content. I am responsible for resolving complex customer service issues.
- I collaborate closely with the Organizational Development Manager to ensure staff are trained on Library, branch and job-specific skills.
- I support and develop programming with core librarians and work closely with the Program Coordinator to assure consistent, responsive, and meaningful library programming.
- I enhance the Library’s relationships with key community stakeholders. I participate on various community boards and committees and listen to the groups’ expressed values, needs, and goals. I contribute to the creation of partnerships and create and support proposed initiatives related to the branch. I collaborate with Branch managers and librarians to achieve goals.
- I serve on teams to collaborate on Public Services approaches across the Library.
- I chair a core audience committee and support collaboration on Teen’s services across the Library and work closely with branch managers to achieve this consistency.
- I execute visual merchandising plans within the department.

- Fluency in a second language is considered helpful.
Required Education/Experience and License Certifications
- Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS) from an ALA accredited college or university required.
- Three years of professional leadership and/or supervisory experience required.
- Demonstrated experience in the field of library services, programming, community partnerships and engagement, and broad knowledge of physical and digital content required
- Valid driver’s license and proof of insurability.
- Indiana Public Library Certification – Level 2 required. ALA-accredited MLS degree (or equivalent).
Supervision Received
Receives broad administrative oversight under the direction of the Assistant Director of Public Services. Works within a framework of general policies and procedures. Collaborates with other managers to deliver consistent and community focused services. Refers library-wide issues to the Assistant Director of Public Services.
Supervision Exercised
Hires, trains, supervises and oversees performance management for Teen core staff. Supports front-line service staff through training, mentoring and direct supervision. Sets expectations, directs assignments and provides leadership to staff and is directly accountable for results. Resolves the most complex challenges related to services delivered to adults/teens/children. Evaluates objectives and effectiveness, recommends changes to provisioning and goals.
Working Conditions
- Regularly sitting and performing various repetitive actions and extensive use of keyboards, mice monitors, and varied digital devices, requires using hands to finger, handling or feeling and repetitive motions.
- Frequently standing, walking, moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, and moving from one work site to another.
- Work has standard vision requirements; frequent speaking, vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
- Frequent to occasional travel, entering and exiting vehicles, driving, moving, and carrying materials to and from various locations.
- Occasional moderate lifting (25 lbs.) and infrequent heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.). Assistance with excessive loads is required.
- Normal library working conditions; moderate exposure to office/maintenance chemicals (cleaning solutions, glue, paint, etc.).
- Occasional exposure to fluctuations in interior conditions such as noise and temperatures.
- May encounter exposure to outside elements, heat, cold, rain, snow, ice, etc. when traveling on library business.
- Infrequent climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms.

Indiana Public Library (LPL) Certification – Librarian Level 2
Applicants must be available for weekday, weekend, and evening shifts. MCPL work schedules adjust in response to changing operational needs.
