  • Position Summary

    The Special Education Services Specialist is a full-time position that reports to the Special Education Services Director. The Special Education Services Specialist will observe, process, maintain, and disseminate information regarding student identification, student verification, and student records per applicable federal, state, and local laws and requirements, as well as in compliance with the Alabama Community College System (ACCS), Board of Trustees, and JF Ingram State Technical College policies and procedures. Listed below are the primary responsibilities for the position; however, other professional duties may be assigned by the Dean of Student Services/Director of Special Education Services and his/her designee to meet the needs of the College.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities



    • Transports special education records qualifying for the Special Education Services program.
    • Transports confidential files for each Special Education student according to the Special Education Services process, following all guidelines related to the confidentiality of student information.
    • Transport Special Education Services students from Frank Lee Work Release Center to Draper Instructional Service Center.
    • Review the list of all incoming inmates 21 and under.
    • Obtains records from the Psychometrist and/or Department of Corrections Screen Beta II, Write, EOS date, location, and MMPI.
    • Provides classroom coverage and is able to maintain order and discipline.
    • Maintains student files daily.
    • Distributes daily intake worksheets.
    • Distributes special education files to counselors, caseload managers, and/or data technicians, understanding and adhering to the importance of confidentiality.
    • Responds to processes accordingly to communications sent regarding verified special education students to appropriate DOC specialists at designated institutions.
    • Supports the Director of Special Education Services in developing an improved understanding of Special Education Services staff members.
    • Verifies Special Education Services Tracking log to determine the transport of students from the work release site.
    • Must be eligible to enter any/all Department of Corrections (DOC), Federal Correctional Institutions (FCI), and Pardons & Paroles Facilities to perform the job duties and maintain this status for continued employment.
    • Drives state-owned vehicles to visit potential employers statewide (must possess and maintain a valid Alabama driver’s license and be eligible for College automotive insurance coverage).
    • Pick up and deliver supplies to appropriate special education sites and other ISTC sites (using college vehicles).
    • Pick up and deliver mail and other documents to /from the State Department of Education post office and ISTC campuses as necessary (using college vehicles).
    • Assist the facilities department with maintenance needs pertaining to the Special Education Services.
    • Completes required paperwork in an accurate and timely manner.
    • Attends mandatory monthly staff meetings and any other meetings called by the Special Education Services Director and/or Coordinator.
    • Sensitivity and commitment to cultural diversity.
    • Complies with any applicable guidelines, procedures, and policies set forth by the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) Board of Trustees, the Alabama Community College System, and J.F. Ingram State Technical College.

    Qualifications

    A high school diploma, valid driver's license, clean driving record, customer relations, giving and receiving information on a daily basis, and knowledge of receiving and processing Help Desk tickets required.
    Proficient in Microsoft Office, with post-secondary education related to office management, is preferred.
