Medical Device Lab Technician works in a laboratory setting, producing medical devices such as prosthetics or orthotics, implants, or other devices. Configures and constructs devices to specifications established by a physician or other health care provider. Being a Medical Device Lab Technician utilizes tools and precision instruments to result in customized fit, optimal function, and maximum comfort for the patient. Disassembles, repairs, and reassembles defective or worn devices or appliances. Additionally, Medical Device Lab Technician works closely with the Orthotist or Prosthetist. Requires a high school diploma. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Device Lab Technician works under moderate supervision.     Under the direction of the Laboratory POCT director with a propensity for independent judgment and decision making skills, oversees and monitors moderate and low complexity clinical laboratory POCT and send out tests on specimens for screening and diagnostic purposes. Performs validation studies for the laboratory. Assists in training the clinical staffs on new and ongoing laboratory procedures. Participates in proficiency test for laboratory compliance and readiness. Monitors the maintenance of the laboratory equipment and reports quality metrics for the performed tests. Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to routine traveling, overseeing and reporting of laboratory dispatch, quality control, quality assurance and inventory at different COVID19 testing clinics.

    SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Assist in overseeing point of care testing (POCT) and procedures for diagnosis on specimens submitted to the laboratory; input of raw data from instruments into computer to determine final results and records results on report forms, in record books, and/or in electronic forms, as appropriate and required.
    • Participates in internal and external programs of quality control and proficiency testing as required by regulatory agencies.
    • Assist in overseeing preparation of packages, labels and standardizes laboratory media, reagents, and controls to ensure that the laboratory is adequately supplied.
    • Prepares reports, makes entries on charts and maintains data and other records on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, as required.
    • Assist in overseeing, monitoring and/or reviewing the POCT work of clinical staffs, as required.
    • Under direct supervision, performs functions which require limited technical skills; records result on laboratory report forms, in record books, and/or in electronic form, as appropriate and required.
    • Maintains laboratory records and prepares reports.
    • Assists in on-the-job or classroom training of clinical staffs for POCT such as COVID19 and Influenza testing, as required.
    • Orders and maintains adequate amounts of reagents, and other supplies or assists supervisor with this function.
    • Provides support for maintenance of the work area quality; maintenance of files and statistics; maintenance of clean work station and equipment and stock of clinical supplies.
    • Ensures good working order of equipment, provides technical assistance, keeping supervisor(s) informed.
    • Performs related duties as assigned or required as professional laboratory technician.
    • Understand and practice the elements of the National Patient Safety Goals specifically to avoid misidentification of patients.
    • Understands and obey HIPAA laws specifically to protect the confidentiality of patient information.
    • Responsible for assisting the overall supervision of the lab/POCT workflow.
    • Responsible for reviewing and follow up on POC quality control.
    • Point of Care (POC) validation studies as assigned by the supervisor.
    QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB:

    CERTIFICATION(S)/LICENSE(S):
    NYS License for Medical Technician. The Laboratory Tech must be qualified as a medical technician pursuant to the provisions of section 58-1.5(b) of the NYS Clinical Laboratory Subpart 58-1
    One year of full-time paid experience as a technician performing pertinent tests and analyses in a clinical laboratory as defined in Title V, Section 57 1 of the New York State Public Health Law.

    YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:
    Minimum one year of work experience in a clinical laboratory

    EDUCATIONAL LEVEL:
    Completion of an associate degree in Medical Technology/basic science plus one year of training in a clinical laboratory.
