Medical Librarian (MLS) provides guidance and assistance to users researching medical information using database searches, inter-library loans, and other resources. Ensures the cataloging and circulation of materials are performed efficiently and correctly according to policies and standards. Being a Medical Librarian (MLS) creates training materials and delivers library instruction and education programs for physicians and other staff. Leads or contributes ideas for library strategic planning, quality initiatives, and the development of digital media and educational resources. Additionally, Medical Librarian (MLS) maintains current knowledge of medical developments and scientific literature. Requires a master's degree in library science. Typically reports to a manager. The Medical Librarian (MLS) occasionally directed in several aspects of the work. Gaining exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function. Responsibilities include planning, publicizing and presenting story times and other literature-based programs for children from babies to pre-teens; providing reference and readers advisory services for children of all ages; guiding young people in the use of digital resources; participating in system-wide events such as Summer Reading Challenges and NJ Makers Day; other duties as assigned. Responsibilities also include providing reference and readers advisory services for adults and children, accessing databases and other reference materials, assisting patrons using computer resources, and other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Education:
Master's Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution.
Hold or be eligible for a New Jersey Professional Librarian Certificate
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
Knowledge of databases and print reference services
Ability to use current library technology
Strong customer service skills
Flexibility required to fill last minute schedule changes; schedule may vary
Ability to travel to various library branch locations
Must be able to work with a team
