MetaData Librarian

  • The Metadata Librarian is responsible for co-supervising the library's circulation and reference services. Is responsible for managing the Renton Technical College Library’s collection development, the website, and automation systems. Metadata Librarian will work with faculty members, administrators, and vendors to acquire library materials to support scholarship, curriculum development, information literacy, and knowledge creation. Will be trained and expected to teach library science seminars/workshops and potential future courses.

    This is a full-time, faculty position is scheduled to commence upon hire, continuing with annual 9 month instructional year contracts, summer quarter separate.  Annual salary will include a pending general wage increase as well as degree stipend.  The annual salary is between $86,692 - $102,454.     • Provide leadership in working to improve access and successful educational outcomes for underrepresented student populations.
    • Work to eliminate institutional and structural racism and its intersections with other forms of oppression, including sexism, heterosexism, classism, and ableism through library services and instruction.
    • Maintain circulation and reserve modules of the automated library system, following established network policy, procedures, and related statistics.
    • Work closely with faculty to compile and maintain access to reserve materials.
    • Create records that enable the discovery of library resources and training resources for library staff. They will also identify and implement new and emerging trends, best practices, and models for resource description. 
    • Accountable for entering and creating interdepartmental acquisition requisitions for approval. 
    • Play a key role in collection development, acquisitions, stack management, and makerspace.
    • Mediates patron disputes related to circulation policies and procedures; resolves problems, answers questions, and addresses patron concerns.
    • Create monthly statistical reports and departmental records for circulation, reserves, personnel, budget, overdue, collection maintenance and equipment.
    • Actively promotes and markets library initiatives internally and externally. Works cooperatively with other departments to implement new projects and initiatives.
    • Provide direct services to library patrons and consortium customers including reference and circulation services, using a variety of print and online information resources.
    • Create online research guides in collaboration with fellow librarians.
    • Select materials for the library collection. 
    • Serve on college and library committees, as well as participate in local, regional, and national associations.
    • Ability to work well within a team environment.
    • Communicate professionally and effectively, both orally and in writing, with college employees, departments and outside agencies.
    • Maintain current awareness and skills in library technologies and trends. 
    • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Associate Dean of the Library.
    • Demonstrated leadership in institutional programs with persons from diverse backgrounds such as sexual orientation, racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender, age, socio-economic, physical and learning abilities, and a commitment to an inclusive and equitable working / learning environment. 
    • Master’s degree in library science from a program accredited by the American Library Association.
    • At least 2 years of experience as a professional librarian; information literacy instruction experience preferred.
    • Experience creating original MARC records. Able to apply current cataloging standards: MARC 21, RDA, AACR2, Library of Congress classification system and subject headings. 
    • Experience using MARC editing tools (e.g. Mar-Edit).
    • Experience promoting and providing library education to adult learners and assessing student-learning outcomes.
    • Ability to supervise professional, paraprofessional, clerical and volunteer, full and part-time personnel.
    • Knowledge of contemporary principles and practices of library science
    • Knowledge of library automation systems and software. 
    • Ability to plan, establish priorities, allocate resources, and implement plans.
    • Ability to design and deliver instruction in formal workshops and informal one-on-one settings. 
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills that will enable them to work with a diverse clientele of professional-technical faculty, students, staff, and community patrons.
    • Proficient computer skills and knowledge of online database systems, spreadsheets, Word, Outlook and Excel. Previous success learning new computer software programs/platforms required.
    • Demonstrated ability to promote universal design and accessibility. Proficiency in (or ability to learn within 6 month of hire) the production of accessible content, whether print or electronic. 
    • Demonstrated attention to detail required as well as previous experience maintaining accurate records, managing multiple tasks, and planning and organizing work in order to meet changing priorities and deadlines. 
    • Ability to represent the college in a positive and professional manner, while using tact, discretion and courtesy. 

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Speaker of a language in addition to English is preferred– preference for top spoken languages in the RTC service area (Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian, Somali, Chinese).
    WORKING CONDITIONS:
    Work is mostly sedentary in nature and is performed in an office environment which is adequately heated and ventilated.  Frequent use of computer and exposure to terminal screens in performing work assignments required. May require lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds and pushing/pulling objects weighing 300-400 pounds on wheels.
