  • Job Responsibilities:

    • The Director of Museum/Curator for the Dr. William R. Harvey Museum of Art need an individual who is creative, thoughtful, enthusiastic and team-oriented.
    • Work closely with the College Librarian to imagine a new program of exhibitions and lead the future growth of the organization.
    • Develop and leverage deep connections in the local and regional art communities, both traditional and emerging, to expand the Dr. William R. Harvey Museum of Art's artist community and reach.
    • Responsible for research of the collection, recommends acquisitions, and coordinates the Museum's collection planning, handles registrar responsibilities and oversees the development and execution of the exhibition schedule in keeping with the organization's mission and core values.
    • Bring traditional museum experience along with a broad understanding of art, possess a curiosity to learn and a strong desire to innovate, building on the museum's well-respected image through inventive exhibitions and creative community collaborations.
    • Requires strong written and verbal communication skills, precise attention to detail, and the ability to communicate scholarly information to diverse audiences.
    • Work well both independently and as a collaborative and diplomatic team member. The candidate should be highly motivated with a positive attitude.
    Specific Duties:
    • Oversee care, display, interpretation, and promotion of artworks and artifacts and manage the care of the permanent collection in alignment with the organization's collections management policy and by exercising best practices.
    • Pursue and disseminate collections- and exhibition-related research, through gallery talks, public lectures, and a range of publications (general and scholarly, internal and external).
    • Collaborate with other college department colleagues to plan and develop effective educational programming and materials related to exhibitions and collections, including among other programs.
    • Develop collaborative relationships with other museum curators as well as private collectors to augment permanent collection exhibitions with loans, as well as expertise and best practices, in addition, identify traveling exhibitions from other institutions for presentation at the museum.
    • Coordinate all aspects of exhibition planning, including: set and schedule dates for exhibitions, schedule appropriate studio visits, communicate with exhibiting artists and select work for exhibitions, issue appropriate paperwork and artist contracts, prepare labels, install and de-install exhibits, and coordinate exhibit opening receptions.
    • Coordinate production of all exhibition materials (wall vinyl, postcards, posters, catalogs, brochures, signage, etc.) including: preparation of text and work with designers of exhibition materials as well as work with external vendors for printing and delivery of materials.
    • Maintain exhibition-related materials and ensure that appropriate museum staff (volunteers included) have access to accurate and current information.
    • Supervise volunteer curatorial staff and intern(s) when required, providing an excellent example of professionalism, generosity and team building.
    • Ensure current and accurate permanent collection records: oversee the cataloguing, photographing, numbering, identification labels, condition reporting and maintenance of artists’ biographical information.
    • Oversee the collection's conservation and maintenance schedule and implement conservation and maintenance projects within budget as required.
    • Make recommendations for acquisitions to the director.
    • Provide content as needed for social media accounts.
    • Additional duties as required by supervisor.

    Qualifications:
    • Master’s degree in museum studies, art history, fine art, museum education, or related field.
    • Knowledge and understanding of The American Alliance of Museums standards and guidelines for conservation, collections management, exhibit, design and interpretation;
    • Proficiency in database and collections management software and Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
