  • The basic function of the director of pharmacy is to provide leadership and technical/professional expertise for the ongoing growth and continuous improvement of all aspects of the pharmacy services and the medication use process at Ellis Hospital.

     

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

     Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy

    • a graduate degree (M.S., MBA or Pharm.D.) is preferred, but not required.  The director of pharmacy must be licensed to practice pharmacy in New York State or must be eligible for New York State Licensure.  Ideally, the director of pharmacy should have at least five (5) years of experience working in an institutional pharmacy with at least two (2) years at a managerial level.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

     Should be able to push/pull, lift/move 35 lb., be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a keyboard, writing, and filing for extended periods of time, must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing and using photo copiers.  Mobility requirements may include the ability to be stationary at a workstation for a prolonged period time in addition to being able to squat or be mobile for a reasonable length of time and distance.  Communication requirements include the ability to comprehend the spoken English language in addition to being able to communicate and read the English language.

    • The Plan of Care is monitored and amended with opportunities for improvement as evidenced by the quarterly report.
    • Continuous quality improvement is supported by the department as evidenced by multiple team participation and process improvements.
    • Appropriate staffing is maintained by the director in collaboration with Senior Leadership and Human Resources.
    • All medication orders are filled in a timely manner in compliance with state and federal regulations.
    • Staff is employed with clear expectations and work harmoniously with all other hospital personnel.
    • The director provides exemplary quality care to all patients, considering individual patient’s special needs or age-related needs.
    • The operation of the department meets all regulatory standards. Responsible for organizing, developing, directing, and coordinating intra and inter-departmental activities and relationships of the department, with respect to the medication use system, in a prompt, courteous and professional manner. 
    • Participate on assigned hospital committees.
    • Incorporate new information, techniques and technology in the medication use system.
    • Provide input and perform follow-up with respect to medication use issues.
    • Collect and report adverse drug reaction, medication occurrence and problem medication order data.
    • Participate in drug therapy quality improvement activities and patient focuses pharmaceutical care efforts.
    • Provide education to the Medical-Dental staff on drug therapy related issues.
    • Prepare P & T Committee meeting agendas, information packets and minutes with the Clinical Manager
    • Maintain the hospital formulary by researching new drugs for formulary admission and proposing agents for deletion via the P&T Committee  
    • Suggest, develop and perform drug use evaluations (DUEs) and report results to the Committee.
    • Participate in the review of adverse drug reactions, medication occurrences and problem medication orders.
    • Develop medication use policies and procedures for presentation to the Committee for approval.
    • Coordinate and communicate follow-up on P & T Committee actions, including the Medical-Dental Executive Committee (MDEC).
    • As evidenced by the Plan of Care and quarterly reports, revenue and expenses stay in line, with variations having a valid explanation.
    • Prepares annual departmental revenue and expense budget as well as capital appropriation budget.
    • Supervises the procurement functions for pharmaceuticals, biologicals, par-enteral nutrition products, chemo-therapeutic agents, vaccines and blood-derived products, including proper receipt and storage of supplies.
    • Explores innovative ideas and implements enhanced services to improve the quality and safety of patient care.
    • Through continuous quality improvement efforts, problems and opportunities for improvement are identified and acted upon.
    • Establish the Ellis Hospital pharmacy department as a respected and progressive service in the healthcare community.
    • Represents the department commendably with healthcare practitioners, administration, and other hospital departments and outside agencies and entities.
    • Pharmacy department staff members complete all required orientations and mandatory continuing education programs.
    • The department staff members demonstrate the desire to learn and continuously improve through interactions with other professionals.
    • All pharmacists attend professional continuing education programs as appropriate.
    • Compliance with requests from administration to perform other duties required by the organization. 
    • Demonstrates knowledge and under-standing of the policies and procedures as outlined in the Exposure Control Manual.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of the appropriate level of personal protective equipment to be used in relation to the specific tasks and responsibilities.
    • Degree of compliance as measured by personal observation of immediate manager.
    • Degree of compliance as measured by feedback from manager.
    • Continuing education records will be completed and forwarded to Human Resources annually.
    • Complete annual health assessment forms as required and maintain current inoculations.
    • Attends continuing education programs within department as outlined in administrative policy procedure manual.

    Salary Range:   $58.87-94.20/hour                 Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
