    The position is based in Batavia, IL and will require working onsite primarily, with ability for occasional work from home.

    You Will:
    The Environment, Safety and Health (ESH) Section seeks a Radionuclide Analysis Facility Manager/Radiation Physicist III to join their Health Physics Services Radiation Analysis Department. The selected candidate will act as the manager for ESH's Radionuclide Analysis Facility (RAF), which provides analysis of samples for radioactivity content in support of Fermilab's overall environment, safety, health, and quality and accelerator operations programs.
    Under very limited supervision they will:

    • Be responsible for management of the RAF analytical program and supervision of its team of two technicians, one lab analyst, and one quality assurance program lead.
    • Lead reorganization of the RAF and its procedures to increase efficiency, quality, and compliance.
    • Be the subject matter expert for radionuclide analysis in support of environmental and operational sampling, as well as some sampling in support of major projects. Develop, implement, and maintain analytical procedures for the same.
    • Together with the RAF quality assurance lead, ensure that RAF procedures and analyses are in compliance with applicable Fermilab and DOE requirements.
    • Creatively apply knowledge and experience to develop solutions to the radioanalytical needs of the ESH Radiological Control Operations and Environmental Program Departments, as well as those of other major projects as they arise.
    • Conduct analyses to ensure RAF procedures keep doses as low as reasonably achievable.
    • Participate in the development of policy documents in accordance with applicable regulations and in harmony with other Laboratory policies.
    • Train personnel at all levels in radiation safety requirements both informally and as part of the overall Laboratory training program.
    • Prepare technical documentation related to radioanalytical functions.
    • Lead and/or participate in program assessment and quality assurance activities.
    • Develop and maintain recordkeeping systems related to assignment.
    • Provides support to other work groups lab-wide as needs are identified.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
    • Abides by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.

    We Are Looking For:
    Education:

    • Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics or related field (e.g. Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Chemistry, Biology) and 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and training, OR
    • Master's Degree in Health Physics or related field (e.g. Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Chemistry, Biology) and 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and training, OR
    • PhD in Health Physics or related field (e.g. Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Chemistry, Biology) and 1 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and training

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Direct experience in personnel management.
    • Ability to conduct and evaluate radiological surveys
    • Ability to perform hazard analysis
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to interface effectively with the Laboratory user/visitor community and employees, management and Department of Energy (DOE) officials as required
    • Have an interest in particle accelerators and their operations
    • Direct experience in radiochemistry preferred
    • Knowledge of ALARA principles, preparation of radiological work control documents, emergency decontamination, radiological instrumentation and disposal of radioactive material
    • Experience in planning, overseeing and reviewing radiological work
    • Knowledge of DOE regulatory requirements desirable
    • Knowledge of Material Control & Accountability and nuclear material management desirable
    • Knowledge of source program management desirable
    • Must be flexible and able to quickly adjust to new or changing projects/tasks
    • Proven track record to function independently, demonstrating self-motivation and initiative
    • Strong organization and time management capabilities, including coordination and prioritization of multiple projects
