May require a bachelor's degree and 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Being a Park Naturalist is familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. The Naturalist assists with the design and implementation of education programs, workshops and activities for all ages at the Environmental Discovery Center (EDC). Essential Functions
- Teaches all aspects of standards-based environmental education programs to public, private and homeschool groups.
- Greets groups and the general public visiting the EDC; disseminates information about park features, history, facilities and local areas of interest to park visitors.
- Coordinates and implements environmental education programs and activities in classroom and outdoor settings for a wide range of audiences.
- Responsible for feeding, handling and general care of the EDC’s live animal collection and displays.
- Assists visitors with park reservations for overnight accommodations, canoes and kayaks, rental facilities, etc.
- Prepares clear and comprehensive oral and written reports as well as exhibit design and set-up.
- Performs light housekeeping activities to ensure the attractiveness, cleanliness and safety of the EDC.
- Collects and accounts for revenue. Accurately completes and submits all required receipts and reports.
- Properly secures the building upon opening and closing.
- Works as needed on holidays, weekdays, weekends and/or evenings.
Non-Essential Functions- Organizes and maintains environmental education supplies and materials.
- Keeps abreast of environmental education.
- Represents the Environmental Discovery Center and Lynches River County Park at community festivals and events.
- Performs all other related duties as required.
QualificationsPhysical Demands- Associate’s degree or higher with emphasis in environmental interpretation, life science, or elementary or middle school education or an equivalency preferred. Experience in the field of Environmental Education/Interpretation desired.
- Professional certification in interpretation, education, or similar field is preferred.
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and computer operations.
- Requires a valid driver’s license.
- Must possess, or be able to obtain, First Aid and CPR certification upon hire.
- Must be comfortable presenting education programs to groups of varying sizes.

- Must be able to reach, bend, stoop, carry, move and lift 30 lb. objects regularly.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- The employee must have the ability to travel up to 10%.
