Phlebotomist draws and collects blood samples from patients, verifies records and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis. May prick finger to draw blood. Being a Phlebotomist may conduct interviews, take vital signs, and draw and test blood samples to screen donors at blood bank. Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. The Phlebotomist will greet patients, family members, and visitors in a friendly, professional manner; perform designated clerical duties; obtain patient specimens in accordance with hospital policies and procedures and as set forth by local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
Utilizes Personal Protective Equipment and follows established policies and procedures including chemical hygiene and biohazard protocols.
Collects specimens from patient using age-appropriate techniques; labels and prepares specimens for testing/transport; performs related data entry functions in a careful and timely fashion with meticulous attention to identification and handling.
Receives, evaluates, & solves problems related to specimen collection & processing, ensuring specimen integrity, so that quality results are obtained.
Performs waived testing according to established procedures.
Accurately reports test results.
Recognizes critical results & documents action taken according to established policies.
Uses the electronic medical record efficiently to register patients, order tests & obtain information, in keeping with established protocols.
Maintains all patient information files and electronic health records related to phlebotomy services; updating as needed.

High School Diploma of Equivalent
Knowledge of or ability to learn skills related to Phlebotomy including: applying tourniquets, BLS, proper technique and protocol for collecting blood, reading and interpreting medical documents, taking vital signs, infection control, and venipuncture
Associate’s Degree or Graduate of a Technical School Preferred
1 to 2 Years of Position-Related Experience Preferred
Phlebotomy Technician Certification (ASCP) (American Society for Clinical Pathology) or equivalent Preferred
