    Job Description

    ProSidian Seeks a Physicist - Physics (PH109) (Time and Materials | Exempt Engagement Team - Senior Consultant Level) to support an engagement for a liquid waste contractor (Savannah River Remediation [SRMC]) at the Savannah River Site in Aiken, SC, which is owned by the U.S. Department of Energy. - PH109 | Prof.  This position is located in the Savannah River Site / Aiken, South Carolina Area. 

    Physicist - Physics (PH109) Candidates shall work to support requirements for TBC (Physics Services) and statement of work (SOW) while maintaining required qualifications Nuclear & Environmental Management Sector.  ProSidian Team Members work as part of the Physicist Engagement Team Cadre to serve as a Physicist responsible for performing a variety of Physics and Health Physics assignments, including design, manufacture, test, installation, operation, and maintenance of various process equipment and systems, and generally as a member of a design, construction, operations, or review team on more complex assignments or as a lead on less complex assignments.  In addition, support and engagement for a liquid waste contractor (Savannah River Remediation [SRMC]) at the Savannah River Site in Aiken, SC, which the US Department of Energy owns.

    When you're a Nuclear Physicist, you run tests; evaluate discoveries, apply modern science in new and different ways, and develop new, cleaner, safer, or more efficient means of producing nuclear energy.  You might also work in a lab studying the properties of nuclear materials.  A physicist works to explain how forces, structures, and phenomena affect the natural world.  This position requires extensive research to produce reports and technical papers that contribute to the industry at large, as well as lecturing and teaching students about the laws of physics.  Physicists plan and conduct scientific experiments and studies to test theories and discover properties of matter and energy.  In addition, physicists and astronomers study the interactions between matter and energy.

    This service supports Environmental Management Sector Clients (For Present / Future Requirements), and ProSidian Team Members work as part of an Engagement Team Cadre to fulfill Physics and Health Physics requirements.  A Physicist, or Facilities Physicist, designs, builds and tests various mechanical devices, like industrial machines, transportation systems, and robotics equipment.  In addition, Physicists perform many Physics, scientific and technical tasks related to the process of Nuclear, Energy, and Environmental Management Sector products/services/deliverables.  Some of their typical duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following worksite functionalities (Specific Task Order Performance Work Statements May supersede listed tasks for this role):

    ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Particle and nuclear physicists study the properties of atomic and subatomic particles, such as quarks, electrons, and nuclei, and the forces that cause their interactions.
    • Act as a lead on less complex tasks and responsible for a portion of an analysis or calculation review.
    • Assist with incident investigations and developing, reviewing, and implementing technical documents, records, calibration methods, and instrument evaluations.
    • Based on daily QA/QC results remove and place in-service counting systems as appropriate.
    • Conduct site visits, analyze radiological problems, propose solutions and alternatives, and provide recommendations.
    • Coordinate and work closely with other technical personnel, logistics, financial, and program management disciplines to define system specifications and requirements.
    • Develop and maintain calibration and operation procedures along with maintaining training guides.
    • Develop, maintain and produce technical documentation and system/subsystem specifications.
    • Direct interface and liaison with customers at all levels from quotation to final calculations and technical working group meetings to comply with requirements and specifications.
    • Ensure the proper operation of the CCF counting systems by reviewing the daily QA/QC checks.
    • Ensuring that instruments and calibration equipment are properly maintained and calibrated.
    • Establish and maintain a filing system or database to track work status.
    • Experience with MCNP and SCALE codes is a plus
    • Fulfill the position of the lead Technical Oversight for the Centralized Counting facility (CCF).
    • Guiding CCF technicians to rectify any difficulties encountered in analyzing air samples and reviewing paperwork associated with air samples that exceed trigger levels.
    • Perform a range of calculations, analysis, or review tasks under minimal supervision.
    • Provide primary lead functions for the CCF Technical Authority for calibration of counting equipment, field implementation, and troubleshooting of CCF-related counting equipment and any associated procedures and guidance documents.
    • Providing technical oversight on the day-to-day operations of the CCF
    • Responsible for performing a variety of technical assignments in implementing and evaluating radiation protection programs at DOE and commercial nuclear sites.
    • Review all daily data before submitting and archiving.
    • Review and develop input for Technical Basis Manuals.
    • Review calibration quality control data.  Provide technical oversight of instrument calibration devices.
    • Serving as Radiological Air Monitoring Lead at the client Site.  This included overall program support which included general field support, procedure and OJT reviews, communicating with and hosting other SME's from various other DOE facilities, writing technical documents, feasibility testing for updating new software and equipment
    • Support development of technical proposal and provide comments on the technical content and level of effort of the proposed scope of work
    • Verify and comply with documentation standards and procedures.
    • Working knowledge of computer systems and integrated software application programs a plus

    Qualifications

    QUALIFICATIONS FOR PHYSICIST

    • A passing score on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam
    • Ability to conduct assessments and audits, independent checks, readiness reviews, or similar within DOE facilities.
    • Ability to function as a consultant in solving problems.
    • Ability to operate complex machinery
    • Adequate technical skills to read and understand drawings, diagrams, procurement packages, P&IDs, or similar.
    • Computer competency in the use of Excel and MS Word.
    • Detail-oriented and able to solve problems independently
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Experience working with Design Change Control (specifically change orders and Temporary Modifications)
    • Experience working with Lock Out/Tag Out programs
    • Familiarity with at least one maintenance/plant operations software package (Smart Plant, Champs, or Maximo).
    • History of developing or working with work packages.
    • Keep up to date with fast-moving developments in science and technology
    • Lab and field work during studies is highly recommended
    • Possess a strong mathematics background

    PREFERRED PHYSICIST QUALIFICATIONS

    • A variety of technical skills, industry knowledge, and soft skills to work with team members in creating effective products and devices.
    • Ability to work under pressure
    • Advanced problem-solving and critical thinking skills
    • An engineering license is required

    • Commercial awareness, including an understanding of target user and market

    • Degree in Physics and Health Physics or similar field; a Master's or Ph.D. Is a plus
    • Due to the nature of the work, the Candidate must be a US Citizen | Dual Citizenship is not permitted
    • Effective verbal and written communication
    • Excellent communication, analytical skills, and professional attitude.
    • Excellent mathematical and analytical skills
    • Excellent understanding of safety rules and laws on nuclear power use
    • Hands-on experience managing complex machinery

    • The position may require the ability to pass and maintain a DOE Security Clearance.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    • Bachelor's degree in Health Physics or related scientific field and at least 3 years of job-related experience or equivalent.  Good communications and analytical skills; Position may require travel.  The position may require the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Security Clearance.
    • Demonstrated DOE and commercial nuclear experience in performing radiation protection analyses involving high beta-gamma radiation fields documented in accordance with quality standard procedures.
    • Demonstrated DOE and commercial nuclear experience in understanding and implementing the requirements of 10 CFR 835, applicable DOE Orders, site Radiological Control Manuals, and associated Radiological Control procedures.
    • Ensures that the five core functions of the Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS) are understood and applied when performing job duties.  Ensures that excellence is achieved through the appropriate implementation of conduct of operations.  Participates in safety-related processes and programs.
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills.
    • Excellent math skills, including advanced geometry, calculus, and physics
    • Knowledge of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and other Physics and Health Physics concepts
    • Lead in a Nuclear, Energy, and Environmental Management Sector maintenance organization within a DOE facility.
    • Physicists must have a bachelor's degree in Physics and Health Physics or another Physics and Health Physics discipline, such as biomedical or computer Physics and Health Physics. 
    • Reviews and evaluates proposed radiological work activities.  Develops Technical Work Documents, ALARA reviews, and associated documents.  Ensures that radiological controls are comprehensive and documented according to radiological procedures.

     

    • U.S.  Citizenship Required - You must be a United States Citizen

    • Proficient with Microsoft Office Products (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, & Adobe)

    3.6 Personnel Qualifications/Certifications --- all personnel shall have demonstrated experience in Nuclear Safety, Criticality, Radiological Engineering, Health Physics, Fire Protection, or Engineering Technical Support.  These individuals must have U.S. citizenship and the ability to maintain DOE site access.

     3.6.1 Nuclear and Criticality Safety --- IMC Contractor/SRS or other DOE complex experience is preferred.

    Criticality personnel are required to obtain or have SRS Nuclear Criticality Safety qualifications (e.g., Criticality Safety Engineer (CSE), Senior Criticality Safety Engineer (SCSE), Criticality Safety Officer (CSO), Associate Criticality Safety Engineer (ACSE)).

    Radiological Engineering and Health Physics personnel are required to achieve/maintain applicable SRS qualifications.

     3.6.2 Fire Protection: Fire protection personnel shall be ---

     1. Registered professional engineer in an engineering discipline that encompasses the scope of work being performed. Or

    2. Certified National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) Level III in the applicable NICET subfield for the subject fire protection system (i.e., water-based systems layout, fire alarm systems, inspection and testing of water-based systems, special hazards suppression

    systems, or special hazards suppression systems, or special hazards systems).

    Or

    3. Manufacturer/Factory trained and certified for the subject fire protection systems/feature. Or

    4. Graduate of an accredited engineering curriculum with a minimum of four (4) years of engineering practice, three (3) of which are in design that encompasses the subject fire protection system.

    3.6.3 Engineering Technical Support --- IMC Contractor/SRS or other DOE complex experience is preferred.

    TRAVEL:  Occasional travel may be required to attend meetings, events, site visits, or other training requirements.  Travel is coordinated with the technical point of contact and approved in writing by the Contracting Officer in advance, as allowed, in accordance with Federal Travel Regulations. 

    LOCATION:  Work shall be conducted at or in proximity to Savannah River Site / Aiken, South Carolina

    WORK HOURS: A 40 hour work week is scheduled. SRS utilizes various work schedules; including 5/8s (8 hours/day; five days per week), 4/10s (10 hours/day; four days per week), and a 9/80s (9 hours/day, five days on week A and 4 days on week B). Work week excludes SRS holidays. Each work day has a 30-minute lunch.
