Police Lieutenant supervises a team of police sergeants and other law enforcement support staff. Responsible for officer assignments, patrol operations, and investigations. Being a Police Lieutenant prepares and reviews reports. Ensures all policies and procedures are followed. Additionally, Police Lieutenant coordinates in-service training, staff performance evaluation and development. Requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice or closely related field. Typically reports to a chief of police or police captain. The Police Lieutenant typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Police Lieutenant typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Develops and implements a risk management program that complies with organizational policies, state and federal laws and accreditation standards related to safety and risk management.
    • Develops and implements policies and procedures for identifying, collecting and mitigating potential risks.
    • Provides quarterly reports to the Facilities Director on matters relating to audit findings, and investigation and response to complaints of suspected wrongdoing as described in the BPPJ compliance program.
    • Administer the safety program, including worker’s compensation, return-to-work programs, and safety training. Collects, evaluates and maintains data concerning injuries, claims, worker’s compensation and other risk-related data.
    • Conducts safety inspections in conjunction with safety committees and outside agencies to identify potential hazards and prevent injuries to employees, damage to property and the public. Coordinates and implements corrective actions.
    • Provides a quarterly summary on incidents, claims and claim payments.
    • Evaluates insurance coverage. Identifies exposures and assesses liability through evaluation of claim loss statistics and trends.

    Collects monitors all claims and works with insurer to assure timely filing and resolution of claims.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

    Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from four-year accredited college or university with major coursework in risk management or related field; or a minimum of 10 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience including significant experience in safety management. A Certified Risk Management Professional (CRMP) certification is a plus.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information to police jury members and public groups

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

    Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages and ratios.

    REASONING ABILITY

    Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

    The incumbent must possess a Valid State Driver’s License. Having a Certified Risk Management Professional (CRMP) certification is a plus.
