    The Department of Information and Computer Sciences (ICS) at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor or Associate Professor position starting in the 2024-2025 academic year (possibility of starting in January 2024). We are seeking candidates in the area of Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, with emphasis on development of new models and applications.
     
    The hiring effort is associated with a recently-awarded, 5- year $20M National Science Foundation grant to fund research and capacity building in support of actionable climate science through a collaboration called “Change HI.” The successful candidate will contribute to Change HI research relevant to their area of expertise for the duration of the project.     The University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, a Carnegie R1 research university and the flagship campus of the UH system, is a top-50 public university dedicated to providing world-class teaching, research, and service in a multicultural and inclusive environment. The ICS department has special expertise in data science, visualization, and VR/AR and immersive environments. We work closely with the Hawaii Data Science Institute and other units across the system.

    Duties and Responsibilities:
    Teach and develop courses in information and computer sciences; develop an extramurally funded research program; publish outstanding work in leading scholarly journals and conference proceedings; supervise graduate students; mentor and advise undergraduates; provide department, college, and university service; other scholarly duties as assigned.
     
    Minimum Qualifications Assistant Professor:

    • An earned Ph.D. in Computer Science, Data Science, or a closely-related discipline from a college or university of recognized standing by the time of appointment
    • Demonstrated ability to teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels
    • Demonstrated scholarly achievement
    • Demonstrated capability for creative, high-quality research
    • Poise and good address for meting and conferring with others
     
    Minimum Qualifications Associate Professor:
    • An earned Ph.D. in Computer Science, Data Science, or a closely-related discipline from a college or university of recognized standing by the time of appointment
    • Evidence of proficiency in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels
    • Minimum of four years of full-time rank of assistant professor or equivalent with evidence of increasing professional maturity
    • Scholarly achievement judged competent and adequate for the rank in comparison with peers active in the same field at major research universities
    • Continued evidence of participation in the scholarly and academic affairs of a university or other appropriate organization, or in an appropriate professional society or organization or in other appropriate job-related services activities
    • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize assigned activities, including the supervision of work of assistants when appropriate
    • Ability to serve as a role model for students and junior colleagues
    • Poise and good address for meeting and conferring with others
     
     Assistant Professor and Associate Professor Desirable Qualifications: 
    • Experience with AI/ML/data-science issues and applications in areas related to climate science, agriculture, regenerative economies, smart cities.
    • Strong potential for securing external funding.
    • An outstanding research record with an ability to lead a research program involving students and postdocs
