Professor - Computer Science teaches courses in the discipline area of computer and information sciences. Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensures student engagement. Being a Professor - Computer Science provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Professor - Computer Science typically reports to a department head. Requires a PhD or terminal degree appropriate to the field. Has considerable experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels and initiates research and case studies in field of interest and may publish findings in trade journals or textbooks. Provides intellectual leadership and has made significant contributions to the field. May offer independent study opportunities and mentoring to students.     The Academy at Penguin Hall, an innovative college preparatory school for girls in grades 9-12, seeks a STEM-focused Computer Science Teacher for the 2024-25 academic year. Main responsibilities include teaching 4-5 courses, developing curriculum, and working collaboratively with departments across the school. Other responsibilities include serving as an advisor, sponsoring a club and/or activity, and participating broadly in the life of the school.

    Our Ideal Candidate

    The ideal candidate will be a flexible, dynamic educator with deep content knowledge and an infectious enthusiasm for teaching STEM subjects, including computer science. They will have a related degree and secondary school teaching experience, and a desire to grow a technology program with a STEM focus. They will have a command of pedagogical best practices and commitment to developing students’ skills in all areas of technology, coding, and data science (physics, engineering, and/or other math knowledge is preferred). The ideal candidate will model a growth mindset and be an effective collaborator with a high-performing, fun-loving faculty. Most importantly, they will have both an understanding of and love for working with girls in grades 9-12.

    Responsibilities

    • Demonstrate a passion for both current and emerging technologies and their role in facilitating teaching and learning
    • Teach courses in computer science and science and physics and/or engineering, depending on experience
    • Create engaging, student-centered lessons, materials and assessments
    • Effectively differentiate instruction and successfully use a variety of teaching strategies to meet students’ needs
    • Develop an inclusive classroom culture that supports the social and emotional well-being of all students
    • Exhibit knowledge of current trends, pedagogy, research, and topics of importance in computer science pedagogy by applying it in the classroom and sharing it with teachers across departments
    • Routinely reflect on lessons and approaches, seek feedback, and demonstrate and desire to continually grow one’s teaching practices
    • Participate in curriculum development and review, including proposing and teaching new electives as appropriate
    • Collaborate and communicate regularly with other faculty, administration and parents about the academic, social, and emotional health of students
    • Serve as advisor to a small group of students, a club advisor, and an additional role that supports the school

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in related field required; advanced degree preferred
    • At least 3 years of teaching or related experience; background in Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, and Data Science preferred
    • Experience in interdisciplinary and project-based learning; design-thinking and experience preferred
    • Proven track record of creating equitable and inclusive curriculum and learning environments
    • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
    • Dedicated to motivating and inspiring students to achieve their highest potential and building strong home and school partnerships
    • Ability to navigate a fast-paced environment
    • Familiarity with programming in multiple languages; Javascript and Python preferred
    • Comfort in using and supporting computer technology and engineering lab equipment
