    Description

    Educated, native or near native speaker of Japanese will guide three small classes of elementary and intermediate-level students of that language through an established course of study of the target language during the semester. S/he will speak Japanese with students in class, maintain attendance records, evaluate student daily work, create administer, and grade quizzes and help prepare students for a final exam with an external examiner. S/he will act as a liaison between the language students and the program director and program assistant.

    The tutor must be a United States resident and eligible to work here.

    Assignments are contingent upon sufficient enrollment.

    The Japanese tutor will work eight-nine hours per week Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

    Job Duties

    • Twice weekly, guide small class/es of elementary and intermediate-level students of target language through an established course of study of the language.
    • Speak the target language with students in class, prepare formative assessments, evaluate spoken and written student performance, and help prepare students for a final exam given by an external examiner.
    • Keep detailed attendance records in the learning management system, Canvas.
    • Record daily participation, homework, and quiz grades in Canvas.
    • Follow a syllabus and other directions provided by the Program Director.
    • Change instruction from "In person" to "Synchronous online," as necessary.
    • Handle confidential student information and assessment materials.
    • Refer students to Program Director for advising.
    • Meet course objectives.
    • Uphold program standards.
    • Assess the level of prospective students, as needed.
    • Promote the Critical Languages Program.
    • Recruit students.

    Qualifications

    To apply for this job, you must be able to answer "yes" to the following questions and your résumé and/or cover letter must clearly support your answers.

    • Are you a native or near native speaker of Japanese?
    • Are you able to understand, read, write, and type the formal standard register of Japanese?
    • Do you have at least an associate's degree?
    • Do you have at least two years experience working in the private or public sector?
    • Do you have a minimum two years’ experience using Microsoft Outlook and Word?

    Qualified applicants will also be required to have the following skills, attributes, and abilities:

    • Ability to work independently and as a team member.

    • Sitting or standing for up to four and a half hours at a time, walking to the classroom and the language lab, as well as going up and down stairs.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree or certification related to second-language teaching.
    • Teaching and/or tutoring experience of a second language.
    • Knowledge of the culture and organization of an academic institution.
    • Proficiency using a learning management system (Moodle, Blackboard, Canvas, etc.).
    • Proficiency using PowerPoint to create teaching presentations.
    • Proficiency using voice recording software to create teaching and testing materials.
