    Your New Role:

    This is an exciting opportunity for a counselor with 2-5 years of experience who is looking to advance their career to the next phase! New Avenues for Youth is launching a truly unique Behavioral Health program model, looking at mental health and recovery supports through the lens of racial equity and Social Determinants of Health (SDoH). You will participate as a subject matter expert and thought partner to assist developing the standards and systems for this new program and would have the opportunity to collaborate with the Clinical Director to bring the Pathways program into alignment with the Behavioral Health Initiative. We are looking for a unique individual that has the creativity and flexibility to assist in the creation of this exciting new program, while serving homeless youth in Portland!

    The Pathways Mental Health Counselor will provide mental health treatment to youth experiencing houselessness, including mental health planning and linkage to ongoing mental health treatment in the community. Services may include assessment, referral, dual diagnosis services, individual and group mental health counseling, housing stabilization, and skill building.

    What this Role is…

    Engaging – In this role, you will experience the ability to meet youth at many different stages of change, facing a variety of different challenging experiences due to intersectionality and oppressive systems. The Pathways therapist strives to engage with young people in a variety of settings and spaces to decrease barriers to care.

    Collaborative - This position provides you with the opportunity to collaborate with various teams within New Avenues, as well as partners in the Homeless Youth Continuum (HYC) and in the community. You will get the opportunity to work with natural support systems as well as be a part of creating larger community through various facets.

    Innovative – In this role you will be a part of a team which includes the assertive engagement case managers, alcohol & drug specialist, and peer mentors. You will be able to apply harm reduction and assertive engagement principles, along with mental health practices analyzed through an ever growing equity and de-colonized lens. You will join a larger clinical initiative team, which is spearheading the creation of in-house clinical services.

    Youth Centered – This work is grounded in positive youth development and motivational interviewing principles, which centers youth as the experts in their lives. It emphasizes culturally responsive approaches, understanding the impacts of trauma, and approaching work with empathy.

    Skills & Attributes:

    · Desire to work with multicultural staff and youth in a diverse setting

    · Understanding of the impacts of trauma on mental health, substance use, and young adult development

    · Willingness to provide training for staff at HYC agencies to assist staff in early identification and support of youth mental health needs

    · Able to develop relationships and collaborate with other New Avenues programs as well as Homeless Youth Continuum (HYC) agencies

    · Familiarity and comfort with engaging youth who are street-involved and utilizing a harm reduction approach

    · Must have access to an automobile, a valid driver’s license, and active auto insurance on that vehicle

    Experience:

    · Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, or social work required

    · Experience conducting mental health and behavioral assessments

    · Bilingual Spanish/English speaking a plus
