Public School Teacher prepares lesson plans and instructs students in an assigned school. Develops and implements grade appropriate course work, activities, and assessments to meet the academic needs of children in a K-12 classroom setting. Additionally, Public School Teacher participates in development and implementation of Individual Education Plans for specific students. Resolves classroom issues and conflicts. May participate in implementing special programs for students. May supervise teaching assistants. Requires a bachelor's degree. May require specific state-level teaching license. Typically requires Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Typically reports to a principal. The Public School Teacher occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.     The Devens School Program combines the collective strengths of students, families and the school to develop collaborative plans, enabling students with significant social, emotional, behavioral, and academic challenges to learn and use skills to meet their educational goals in a therapeutic public day special education school program.  The program is evidence-based with an emphasis on Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS); integration of support and education including school based cognitive behavioral therapeutic support. Additional focus is on the continuous connections between the students, families, and local school district personnel. The program strives to assist students in their social emotional competence and academic development to transition to less restrictive academic settings.

     

    DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION: 

    ESL teachers are responsible for utilizing research-based second language acquisition strategies to teach English Learners in grades K-12 in mixed grade level classrooms in a co-teaching, standalone, and push-in model. When possible, ESL teachers will co-teach and push-in during ELA,  Math, Science and Social Studies lessons.  ESL teachers will work with teaching teams to support EL participation and academic achievement by setting common goals and co-planning instruction. Teachers should be well versed in cultural responsiveness and strategies to differentiate for a diverse population of ELs including SLIFE and ELs with Disabilities.   This educator will provide ESL direct instruction to very small groups of students across all grade levels. 

     

    REQUIREMENTS: 

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Education and/or Liberal Arts
    • Massachusetts Teaching Licensure in ESL 
    • SEI Endorsement

    PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

    • Master’s Degree in Education 
    • 3 or more years of teaching experience
    • Dual Licensure in Special Education 
    • Experience working in an urban public schools setting
    • Coursework in Phonics Instruction and/or Applied Linguistics
    • Foreign Language Proficiency

    DUTIES

    • Plan and facilitate ESL lessons for English Learners within existing models of instruction that are aligned with State Standards English Language Arts and Writing.
    • Collaborate and co-plan with classroom co-teachers to provide the highest quality instruction and support for English Learners.
    • Proctor MCAS and ACCESS assessments for English Learners.
    • Assist in EL paperwork management and compliance measures set forth by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
    • Use all available technology and virtual curricula provided by the district to create engaging lessons and supports that are linked with 21st Century skills and remote accessibility.
    • Utilize available student learning data to make instructional decisions and foci including but not limited to MCAS, ACCESS, and i-ready.
    • Use the WIDA Can Do Descriptors and other WIDA tools to plan lessons and anticipate the language demands of a lesson.
    •  Communicates with students during instruction and interpersonal interaction using language structure, tone, and body language that promotes positive student behavior, conflict resolution and problem solving, effective management of power struggles, and the application of proactive strategies for management of escalating behavior.
    • Utilize inclusive practices and SEI strategies for English Learners.
    • Incorporate language activities into content instruction including Speaking, Reading and Writing that align with State Standards for Language Proficiency.
    • Communicate with student families on a regular basis using culturally responsive strategies that promote two-way conversations.
    • Employ a strong growth mindset and participate in professional development that is relevant to the challenges of urban education in order to close opportunity gaps.
    • Collaborate with guidance counselors to refer students who are in need of Social Emotional support.
    • Collaborate with Special Education leadership and teacher colleagues to review IEPs and ensure all accommodations are properly and consistently delivered.
    • Contribute to school-wide initiatives and events which may be assigned by the Principal and Assistant Principal.
