Summary Statement

The City of Boise's Adaptive Recreation program offers recreational, social, and educational programs for individuals with disabilities.
Adaptive Recreation Coordinator:

• Coordinates, manages, and oversees the adaptive recreation program for the Boise Parks and Recreation Department.
• Plans, develops, and directs various educational and recreational programs for people with disabilities and ensures a safe and fun environment.
• This position works under limited supervision.

Essential Functions

Performs the full range of duties (with appropriate managerial review), including hiring, evaluating, promoting and assigning duties; corrects inappropriate actions or behavior through communication and coaching; initiates discipline or termination as needed; and oversees employees or a group.

Plans, coordinates and directs various educational and recreational programs for people with disabilities to ensure a safe and fun environment. Implements and develops new and innovative recreational program offerings for people with disabilities. Creates policies and procedures for classes and programs. Creates program schedules for adaptive recreation programs for schools, partners and individuals and assists with leading programs. Researches, orders, loads, maintains and repairs adaptive equipment and instructs participants on use.

Coordinates program marketing and advertising. Promotes program through writing and editing newsletters, speaking to organizations and working with partners utilizing various advertising outlets. Manages the program's social media accounts.

Submits budget for recommendations and approval and maintains daily oversight of the budget. Makes program recommendations based on the need for service, enrollment and recovery. Coordinates fundraising and donation efforts. Raises money for programs by hosting fundraising events and speaking publicly to solicit donations.

Responds to questions, comments and complaints. Maintains good customer and public relations with participants and community members. Educates the public about programs. Works with families, groups and partners on accessibility issues. Acts as a liaison to community partners to promote and enhance programs for people with disabilities.

Supervisory responsibilities: Employees in this position are authorized to recommend and/or effect the full range of duties (with appropriate managerial review), including hiring, performance evaluations, transferring, promoting, assigning of significant duties, rewarding, disciplining and terminating employment; exercise independent judgment to direct others work and have the authority to take corrective action; and, utilize people skills to communicate, motivate and direct or oversee a person, group, department, or organization.

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
Bachelor’s degree in parks and recreation, therapeutic recreation, physical education, psychology or a related field and three years of experience working with individuals with disabilities, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Knowledge of: rules and regulations regarding accessibility issues for people with disabilities, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA); effective supervisor principles and practices; recreation practices and standards, program management and event planning; marketing and advertising techniques using social media; budget preparation practices and procedures; community relations techniques; and computer usage including related software.

Ability to: work with people who have various ranges of disabilities; market and advertise programa using social media; communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; and perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation.

Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
White Water Rafting and Rescue offered through a certified rafting organization.

Certification through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).

Licensing And Other Requirements

Valid state-issued driver's license.

First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification offered through the City of Boise or an equivalent certifying organization.

Physical Efforts
While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently lifting/carrying up to 20 pounds and occasionally lifting/carrying up to 100 pounds. Also, the employee is occasionally pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds and rarely pushing/pulling up to 75 pounds. The noise level is frequently moderate. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.Additional physical efforts include: rowing rafts through class iii whitewater; assisting people from wheelchairs to adaptive equipment and back; balancing large adapted ski with a skier while in the water; swimming while wearing a lifejacket..

Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures and in wet and humid conditions. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position.Employees work in and around wilderness, whitewater, ice, snow, and unpredictable participants.
This position works: weekends, evenings, and holidays as required.
