    SCOPE OF THE JOB:

    Reporting to the Minister of Religious Education, the RE and Membership Assistant’s role on the RE staff team is to help maintain and enhance an integrated program of religious growth and learning at First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee. Primary responsibilities support the area of Children’s Religious Education programming and outreach to our congregation on Sunday mornings. This comprises 15-20 hours per week. Reporting to the Associate Minister, the membership assistant part of the job is to help welcome and support our guests and new members through office tasks and communications. This comprises 2 – 5 hours per week.

    PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Provide office support for the Minister of Religious Education and Youth Program Coordinator.
    • Provide a warm, helpful, and welcoming presence on Sunday mornings for church families and volunteers.
    • Manage and staff RE Table, including the sign-in process for RE attendees on Sunday mornings.
    • Provide leadership and teaching assistance in Sunday School classes as needed.
    • Communicate with children, parents, volunteers and congregation about Religious Education.
    • Support Religious Education volunteers.
    • Assist with the process and tracking of R.E. volunteer screening, schedules and sign-ups.
    • Provide support for RE special events.
    • Clerical and some database work in support of Children’s Religious Education.
    • Manage and maintain and stock supplies for Religious Education.
    • Monitor safety and cleanliness of RE spaces.
    • Attend weekly RE staff meetings and weekly All Staff meetings in person or online.
    • Notetaking at monthly Children Religious Education committee meetings.
    • Additional tasks upon request of Minister of Religious Education.
    • Provide office support: make nametags, process visitor cards, maintain bulletin boards.
    • Communications: send welcome emails to guests, invite guests to Journey to Membership class, make phone calls to new members.
    • Data entry: make notes on the “Visitor to Member” pathway.
    • Communicate and collaborate with Office Manager.
    • Communicate with lay leaders on the Membership Team as needed.
    • Organize and coordinate Christmas Eve receptions.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Experience working with children, families and the ability to work with church volunteers.
    • Written and verbal communication skills.
    • Computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel). In addition, the ability to learn and utilize technology including Zoom, online volunteer sign-ups, resource platforms and database management tasks.
    • Ability to work independently and maintain confidentiality.
    • Dependability, a warm and welcoming presence, interpersonal and organizational skills.
    • A basic understanding of, and appreciation for, Unitarian Universalism.
    • COVID-19 Vaccination and booster.

    HOURS:

    The RE and Membership Assistant work hours include weekdays, occasional weeknights, and Sunday mornings. Sunday work is required September—May, with up to three Sundays off negotiable as part of the scheduled hours. This is a twelve-month, 20-25-hour per week position; Summer Sunday work is flexible and scheduled with Supervisors.

    PAYMENT:

    $18-20.00 per hour. Taxes will be withheld. Paychecks will be distributed every two weeks.

    SUPERVISION:

    The Minister of Religious Education will provide on-site supervision. Concerns or questions about policies can be referred to the MRE.

    ABSENCE:

    The RE and Membership Assistant may be absent, without compensation, for up to five Sundays per church year, when arrangements are made at least one month in advance with the MRE.

    SICK LEAVE:

    In the event of illness or an emergency, the RE and Membership Assistant should arrange for a substitute from the sub list provided and contact the MRE. Persistent tardiness or absence may be considered grounds for dismissal.

    Vacation, Sick Leave, and Holidays

    The First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee appreciates the hard work of their staff and understands the need for time off. There are 7 designated paid holidays per year, in addition this half-time position receives 9 paid days off annually. In the event of illness or an emergency, the RE and Membership Assistant should arrange for a substitute from the sub list provided and contact the MRE. Persistent tardiness or absence may be considered grounds for dismissal.

    Retirement Savings Plan

    After the completion of one year of employment, the employee shall be provided with a retirement savings plan with contributions made by the Church in an amount equaling 10% of salary; no “matching” is required by the employee.

    Medical Insurance

    Our standard PPO plan is with our denomination’s UUA Health Plan. The church benefit pays 40% of the premium for employees working over 20 but less than 30 hours per week. Dental, disability, and life insurance options are also available to the employee, but the church does not provide any portion of the premium.

    Family Medical Leave Policy

    A leave of absence is granted for birth or adoption to the employee or his/her spouse, or for serious health problems affecting the employee or an immediate family member.

    Performance Reviews

    A written performance review is provided annually.
