Safety Director directs, develops, and oversees the general health and safety policies and procedures of the organization. Ensures the workplace is in compliance with OSHA and other state, local, or industry specific regulations and that periodic safety audits are conducted. Being a Safety Director provides programs that ensure a safe workplace including safety orientations, skill training, emergency preparedness, proper job instruction, hazardous material disposal procedures, and the use of protective equipment. Develops a systemic process to collect data and analyze the causes of accidents and generate required reporting. Additionally, Safety Director implements initiatives to reduce and prevent accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to long-term health hazards. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Safety Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Safety Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.   • Director of Safety- Reports to Vice President of Human Resources. Role will include 4 direct reports including an EHS Manager, Safety Lead, and two Safety Techs. 

    Role is 100% onsite at our manufacturing location in Summerville, SC

    POSITION SUMMARY: The Director of Safety ensures the development and implementation of safety programs, policies, training, and procedures that promote a robust and proactive safety culture and the maintenance of a healthy work environment.  The position serves as an advisor in the development and execution of consistent safety and environmental management programs.   Ensures the Company’s environmental health and safety programs and activities are in compliance with local, state, and federal requirements.  

    FLSA STATUS: EXEMPT

    TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: - Moderate -<20%. Travel between both Summerville locations (side by side buildings) and Benicia, CA as needed.      

    DIRECT/TOTAL REPORTS: 4

    RESPONSIBILITIES – Satisfactorily performing and/or achieving the following Responsibilities are essential duties of the job.

    • Implements process improvement initiatives that drive and promotes a “zero incident” culture.
    • Company recognized Safety Officer. 
    • Manages Corporate Safety Program. 
    • Participates in the development of Environmental Health and Safety goals and objectives.
    • Develops and maintains applicable department metrics and Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s).  Generates and presents monthly report to Safety Committee.
    • Works with COO and other members of the Crisis Management Committee and Teams to coordinate and support Thorne's Business Continuity and Crisis Management planning and activities.
    • Trains and mentors staff to design and schedule internal safety audits on a regular basis to detect existing or potential risks and hazards and ensure recommended corrective or preventive measures are completed in a timely manner.
    • Develops and conducts safety training for employees, safety monitors, contractors, and subcontractors as needed.
    • Prepares and submits required environmental health and safety regulatory reporting.
    • Oversight over workers compensation claims.
    • Preforms root cause analysis on incidents and injuries and works with area leads and supervisors to ensure corrective actions are put in place to avoid future incidents.
    • Ensures after-hours and weekend support for safety emergencies is provided, as required.
    • Reviews required environmental health and safety regulatory reporting.
    • Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety, environmental practices, area processes, and waste reduction opportunities.
    • Reviews and provides feedback on chemicals being introduced into the facility, as well as maintains Safety Data Sheets (SDSs).
    • Ensures on-call support for Thorne security/fire systems and other facility systems is provided, as required.
    • Utilizes staff and provide expertise to organize and manage teams to identify and implement safety improvements.
    • Reviews required environmental health and safety regulatory reporting.
    • Ensures required safety data sheets are completed on substances utilized at the position location.
    • Utilizes staff and provide expertise to lead emergency response team to ensure appropriate training in emergency response, spill response, disaster preparedness, and crisis management.   Ensures drills are conducted and equipment is in a ready state.
    • Directs team to conduct OSHA-acceptable fit testing for respiratory usage or coordinate fit testing by a third party as needed.
    • Directs team to ensure ergonomic assessments are conducted and train employees on proper body mechanics or coordinate with a third party to accomplish.
    • Utilizes staff and provide expertise to coordinate root cause analysis on incidents and injuries to ensure corrective actions are put in place to avoid future incidents. 
    • Ensures (SDS’s) master list is kept up to date.
    • Participates in the development of Environmental Health and Safety goals and objectives.
    • With the General Counsel, manages interaction with state and federal health and safety agencies. 
    • Utilizes and trains staff to assure safety files and records are maintained.
    • Directs required environmental testing and maintain required records. 
    • Supports Change Control process, Corrective and Preventative Action (CAPA) system, nonconforming material process, supplier qualification process, internal audit process and third-party audit process.
    • Keeps Human Resources and the executive staff updated of all safety incidents as they occur and are investigated. Discuss any potential disciplinary action required due to violation of safety standards or policies.
    • Ensures compliance with cGMP, FDA, OSHA, NSF, and all other regulatory requirements, in accordance with company policy.
    • Builds and lead a highly performing team, secure the best talent, develop and strengthen staff and future leaders, and provide ongoing coaching and feedback.
    • Conducts formal and informal performance assessments of staff, including performance versus expectations and goals, behaviors and leadership potential, and seek the same for self.
    • Actively participates in required training, development programs, and electives as suit one’s needs, and support colleagues, trainers, and management as appropriate with these efforts.
    • Promotes the Company’s Mission and Values, including an accountable, innovative, and results-oriented culture that promotes customer service, openness, teamwork, mutual trust, and respect.
    • Trains and utilizes staff to ensure contractors and subcontractors are implementing effective safety processes that comply with local, state, and federal requirements.
    • Trains and utilizes staff to develop and conduct safety training for employees at the position location, and for contractors and subcontractors as needed.
    • Identifies and implements building technologies, procedures, and training to improve infrastructure and equipment efficiency and effectiveness.

    What You Need:

    • A minimum of ten years of safety and environmental experience in a manufacturing facility (or equivalent) is preferred.  Previous experience in cGMP Nutraceutical, Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology, or Food manufacturing preferred. 
    • Bachelor’s degree is required.
    • Professional Certification (CSP, CSMP, CEP, CHMM, REM etc.) from nationally recognized organization preferred.
    • A minimum of five years of experience with generating and analyzing safety metrics is required.
    • A minimum of five years of experience generating and presenting information in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required. 
    • A minimum of five years of experience leading and developing an EHS team. 
    • Comfortable managing and/or performing multifaceted projects in conjunction with day-to-day activities.
    • Employee is able to read and understand written directions in English, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs), and the Thorne Research Employee Handbook. The employee follows instructions, both verbal and written, and communicates effectively with supervisors and fellow employees.
    • Strong knowledge of computers and software required to accomplish the responsibilities of the position. 
    • Solves practical problems and deals with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. 
    • Interprets a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
    • Develops and delivers upon business objectives within stated timeframes.
    • Directs and manages others, delegates appropriately, and follows-up on work assignments.
    • Assesses talent, hires new staff, conducts formal and informal performance assessments, and addresses employee non-performance.
    • Works cooperatively with managers in other departments.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS – Being able to meet the Physical Demands of the job is an essential duty of the job.

    • Must be able to safely work with ingredients and products that are derived from possible allergenic sources including but not limited to nuts, soy, dairy, fish, and shellfish.
