He/She assists the Principal with the oversight of academic programs and extracurricular activities. He/She provides instructional leadership that creates, implements, and maintains excellence, scholarship, and achievement for all students. He/She provides supervision and direction for students in instructional and non-instructional areas. He/She provides leadership in matters of curriculum, instruction, assessment, MCAS analysis, professional development, and data analysis. This is a full-time position with a 225-day work year. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Administration •Serves as the chief administrative and supervisory leader in the school in the absence of the Principal. •Assumes responsibility for the management and operation of the school in accordance with the School Committee policies and state and federal laws and regulations. •Supervises the effective and efficient implementation of educational and instructional programs in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and the provisions of the district’s collective bargaining agreements. •Acts as a student advocate to ensure the rights of all students are respected and that all have equal access to the educational opportunities necessary to meet their needs and abilities. •Collaborates with the Principal to develop the master schedule and teacher assignments. •Attends administrative staff meetings and School Committee meetings as requested by the Superintendent. •Attends special events, school functions and activities, and sports events as determined by the Principal. •Organizes and manages student assessments, MCAS analysis, student placement, special education and 504 plans. •Assists Principal in scheduling of classes; coordinates special programs and grants initiatives. •Assists in the preparation of teacher and student handbooks. •Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities from time to time as warranted or directed by the Principal, the Superintendent, and/or the School Committee. Curriculum and Instruction •Assists the principal in providing an articulated, consistent education for all students while encouraging staff to develop strategies, techniques, and activities that reflect instructional diversity, alternatives, and flexibility. •Collaborates with the principal in the development, evaluation, and revision of curriculum and assumes responsibility for the implementation of approved programs. •Collaborates with the principal to develop, oversee, plan, and implement a staff development program for school personnel. •Serves as the instructional leader of the school in the absence of the Principal. •Provides leadership in the development, revision, and evaluation of the curriculum. Student Services •Monitors student attendance and assists to engage students and families in ensuring compliance with student attendance laws and policies. •Assists in coordinating student support services including counseling and conduct-related issues through the Student Support Team process. •Cooperates with the principal and other district administrators in the process of monitoring the progress of all students, including graduation rates. •Maintains high standards of student safety and conducts and enforces discipline as necessary. Personnel •Supervises and manages staff members in compliance with local, state, and federal law and the policies and procedures of the school district. •Collaborates with Principal in interviewing and hiring qualified staff members. •Assists in the in-service orientation and training of new and non-professional status teachers, with special responsibility for staff administrative procedures and instructions. •Oversees the interviewing and assignment of daily substitutes. •Promotes effective communication and cooperation among staff through regular staff meetings and department and grade level meetings. •Advises the Principal on employee relations. •Observes and evaluates building staff annually in accordance with the law and established district procedures. Business •Assists with budget preparation and monitors budget throughout the fiscal year. •Assists in directing the development of the school’s budget including staffing needs, instructional materials, book needs and other provisions for the activities of the school. School-Community Relations •Promotes effective communication among all members of the school community. •Develops and maintains good relations with the school community and other professional, civic, and volunteer groups. •Works cooperatively with colleagues within the district and from other school districts. •Implements strategies to promote a cooperative spirit among the school’s personnel and parents to enhance the educational and social climate of the school. Facilities •Maintains the school as a healthy and safe learning environment for all students. •Plans and supervises all emergency drills for the building as required by local, state, and federal agencies. Professional Growth •Uses evaluation for self-improvement; carries out individual plan developed with the principal. •Maintains a level of competence in the field of education and stays current in best research-based practices. •Maintains a high level of personal integrity and a strong work ethic. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience •Hold Massachusetts licensure as a High School (9-12) Principal/Assistant Principal; •Master’s Degree in Education or a related field from an accredited college/university is preferred; •Leadership ability in school administration, curriculum, program evaluation, staff development, staff supervision and evaluation; •Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; and •Minimum five years of successful experience as a High School classroom teacher; Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of laws, regulations, and policies governing education in public schools; curriculum and instructional programs and best practices in content areas, assessment, and data analysis. Skill-based competencies include strong managerial and organizational leadership; excellent communication; analysis of data; strong interpersonal, conflict resolution, problem-solving, planning, and organizational skills. Ability-based competencies include reading, communicating, interpreting, and assisting with the enforcement of appropriate state and federal statutes and school policies and procedures; working effectively with administration, colleagues, staff, students, parents, and the community. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, employee is required to remain in a stationary position for extended periods; move/traverse short and long distances, operate computer equipment/software.
