The Suffield Board of Education seeks dynamic and effective leaders as candidates for its Superintendent of Schools position.

About the Suffield Schools

The Suffield Public School District educates approximately 2,000 students in four schools. These include: A. Ward Spaulding School (PK-2); McAlister Intermediate School (3-5); Suffield Middle School (6-8); and Suffield High School (9-12), which combines comprehensive educational programming with an award-winning Agriscience Program that attracts students from around the region.  The close proximity of the schools and the small size of the district enable students, staff and parents to know and be known as members of the school community. Parents are invested in their children’s education and take pride in the excellent schools, teachers and staff that make up Suffield Public Schools. Dedicated parents run parent organizations at each school. 

Suffield Public Schools offer an extensive menu of extracurricular activities, both academic and recreational. The entire staff is committed to establishing a school environment that allows students to flourish and to grow intellectually, emotionally, and socially. 

A nine-member Board of Education is elected to oversee district governance.  The mission of the Suffield Public Schools is to prepare all students with the knowledge, skills and attributes required for success in a rapidly changing world.  The Board, in partnership with the Superintendent, establishes a District Advancement Plan. Recent goals focus on building collaborative partnerships, using data to measure students’ achievement and improve instructional practices, providing opportunities for professional growth to cultivate a talented workforce, developing curriculum and programming to engage students in alignment with the Portrait of a Graduate, and fostering a safe and inclusive school climate and culture. 

About the Suffield Community

Suffield, Connecticut is a small community located in north central Connecticut. Approximately 16,000 residents enjoy picturesque landscapes as well as the convenience of easy access to an interstate highway and an international airport. Suffield’s location between Hartford and Springfield gives residents many options for employment in close proximity.  The community is proud of its agricultural heritage, and as such, has committed much of its farmland to preservation status.

Suffield is governed by a selectman form of government. A Board of Finance is the financial and budget-making authority of the town. The town’s Police Department includes a School Resource Officer. Suffield enjoys a strong sense of community and economic health.

About the Position

The Board seeks a strong educational leader with a demonstrated record of attaining results in student achievement.  Additionally demonstrated competency in the following areas are of importance to the Suffield Board of Education:

• Strong expertise in the areas of teaching and learning Skilled communicator, decision maker and delegator Collaborative and inclusive leadership style Builder of trust and capacity in the leadership team

Working cooperatively with the Board of Education, the superintendent will:

• Project a vision that strengthens the academic experience and outcomes for all students Focus on curriculum and instructional alignment and articulation school to school Be engaged with the community of Suffield beyond the district schools Promote a district-wide safe climate and culture that allows students to flourish and to grow intellectually, emotionally, and socially

The Suffield Search Committee is in the process of engaging its stakeholders in a comprehensive needs assessment survey that will help prioritize the qualities, characteristics, skills, and experiences most desired in its next superintendent. Meanwhile, the search committee seeks to raise interest and thoughtful consideration among potential applicants. Please consider this special opportunity to serve as Superintendent of Schools.

Connecticut Superintendent Certification (093) or eligibility for such is required. The projected salary package for the position is $205,000-$235,000, depending upon the qualifications and experiences of the successful candidate.
