The Middletown School Committee invites exceptional candidates to apply for the position of Superintendent of Schools.

Middletown, Rhode Island is a coastal community rich in history located on Aquidneck Island in Narragansett Bay. It is adjacent to Newport, Rhode Island, 40 miles from Providence and about 70 miles from Boston.  Middletown is home to Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge, two public beaches, hiking trails, and a variety of recreational, cultural, and educational activities. Light industry, agriculture, military, and tourism are Middletown’s primary employers.

With a total population of 17,100 people and 6,993 households, Middletown Public Schools (MPS) serves approximately 2,045 students in five schools with 200 certified teachers and 60 noncertified staff.  The district is governed by a five-member non-partisan School Committee elected on a staggered four year rotation.

The MPS FY 2024 All Funds Budget is $46,064,220. This includes State Education Aid, Municipal Appropriation, Federal Aid, Grants, and Capita Improvement dollars. The district experienced a deficit in FY 2024 but has subsequently had a surplus in FY 2023. The district always seeks grant opportunities that enhance and align with its vision and mission. Recently the community approved a $190 million bond to build a new Middle/High School which will be completed by the start of the 2026-2027 school year.

Middletown Public Schools serves Naval Station Newport (NAVSTA) which is home to 8,000 personnel who make up the 50 Navy, Marine Corps, Army Reserve, Coast Guard, and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) commands. The Newport Naval War College is also located on the base. The district serves over 29% military connected students, including international students from families of the Naval War College.

This year Middletown is serving 189 Multilingual Learners (MLL, also referred to as English Language Learners, or ELL) students. This vibrant and diverse group of learners represent 17 countries and speak 23 different languages with Spanish, Portuguese, and Arabic being the most dominant.  About 34% of our MLL students are families attending the Naval War College, the remaining 66% are Middletown families.

Program offerings at the high school level include twelve different Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Dual enrollment courses are also offered in collaboration with the Community College of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, the University of Rhode Island, and Salve Regina University.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs at the high school are built from a strong foundation in the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) curriculum, helping students develop the skills needed to succeed in the global economy through three Pathway offerings: Pre-Engineering, Computer Science, and Biomedical.

Virtual High School (VHS) offers a catalogue of full semester, NCAA accredited courses.

Visual arts students won a total of sixteen Scholastic Art Awards in 2023 including three Gold Key Regional winners and a National Silver Key Award winner; students were also recognized with All-State Band Member and All-State Choral Member status.

Middletown excels in athletics and holds the 2023 Division III State Football Championship title, Division II State Boys’ Lacrosse Championship title, and Division II State Hockey Championship title. Students have the opportunity to engage in sports starting in middle school and may choose from baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross country, football, golf, gymnastics, hockey, indoor and outdoor track, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, wrestling, and unified basketball.

Students at the middle and high school level have the opportunity to participate in a variety of clubs and activities including Art Club, Band, Chorus, Community Service, Drama, Gaudet Buddies, Geography Bee, Girls Who Code, Green Team, Math Team, Mock Trial, National Honor Society, Newspaper, Robotics, Spelling Bee, Student Council, Unified Theater, and Yearbook.

A robust Special Education Department offers a spectrum of programs, services, and delivery options including services provided by occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, physical therapists, behavioral specialists, social workers, and school psychologists.

The position offers the opportunity to join a strong team and a district committed to excellence and continuous improvement. The Middletown School Committee is prepared to offer a multi-year contract with a regionally competitive salary and benefits package to a future-focused leader with exceptional credentials, accomplishments, and promise.
