Speech and Language Pathology Director plans and directs the operations of an organization's audiology and speech therapy functions to ensure effective operation and compliance with regulatory standards. Designs policies and processes to ensure efficient service delivery and promote best practices. Being an Speech and Language Pathology Director develops and implements long-term strategic plans and objectives for audiology and speech therapy programs in alignment with the organization's overall objectives. Provides leadership and oversight to the development and expansion of programs or service offerings. Additionally, Speech and Language Pathology Director evaluates program design, assessment tools, and treatment protocols and researches advancements in the field. Develops and manages the budget to allocate resources to support staffing, equipment, and other program needs. Monitors operational and financial metrics to measure the achievement of organizational objectives. Negotiates and selects vendor proposals and manages vendors to maintain inventories and adhere to budgets. May require a master's degree in audiology or speech pathology. Requires State License based on Clinical Specialty. Typically reports to senior management. The Speech and Language Pathology Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be an Speech and Language Pathology Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Our department has approximately $5 million dollars in extramural funding annually and is consistently ranked in the upper half of pathology departments in the United States for National Institutes of Health funding.

    Job Description

    We are seeking

    • An academically oriented candidate with 2-10 years of post-fellowship experience; current fellow/recent graduates will be considered
    • PhD with certification for direction of high complexity laboratory by HHS-approved agency or MD or equivalent degree with relevant pathology specialty training and certification by the American Board of Pathology in Clinical Pathology
    • Eligibility for medical licensure in South Carolina if applicable
    • Additional formal training, certification, and/or expertise in molecular subspecialty such as bioinformatics, molecular diagnostics, molecular genomics, laboratory genetics & genomics, or molecular microbiology (preferred but not required)
    • Proficiency in the interpretation of results for those techniques employed in the clinical work-up of cases for precision pathology (genetics and genomics)
    • Advanced practical and diagnostic skills in next generation sequencing
    • Ability to operate and maintain state-of-the-art molecular biology equipment, including PCR machines, real-time PCR instruments, next-generation sequencing platforms, SNP microarray platforms
    • Performance and optimization of quality control procedures to ensure accuracy and reliability of test results
    • Knowledge and experience in new molecular genomic and genetic test development, validation, and implementation
    • Experience in fostering collaborative relationships with clinicians and researchers as well as serving as a resource to technologists at the bench
    • Participation in clinical and/or translational research endeavors
    • Excellent communication skills, work ethic, and collaborative approach to patient care
    • Active participation in teaching of medical students and training of pathology residents and fellows
    • Active participation in the ACGME-accredited molecular genetic pathology fellowship training program ongoing development and training
    • Active participation in the academic mission of the Department

    • Collaborative team composed of 55 faculty
    • High quality training programs with 22 residents and 10-12 fellows who have had a 100% board passage rate for the past 7 years
    • CAP, AABB, ASHI, and FACT certifications and accreditations
    • You will collaboratively support the Directors of the Cytogenetic and Genomics Laboratory and Microbiology Laboratory in terms of variant science, teaching activities, genetics and genomics validation and verification studies (LDT and RUO), accreditation activities, MolDx technical assessment preparation and/or review, and participation in applicable research and/or industry grants.
