    The Structural Engineer will support the Strategic and Theater Sealift Program Office (PMS 385) / NAVSEA05D Ship Design Manager

    Roles and Responsibilities:

    • Provide technical support to NAVSEA05D Ship Design Manager engineering efforts throughout the development, design, production, delivery, and testing phases of ship acquisition and construction.
    • Apply naval engineering experience with a focus on structural and hull engineering.
    • Demonstrate expertise in advanced structural analysis tools and software to optimize the design and performance of ship structures.
    • Conduct structural tests and evaluations to validate the structural integrity and safety of ship systems and equipment.
    • Conduct structural analysis, stress analysis, hand calculations, Finite Element Analysis. Knowledge of welding specifications, symbols and techniques.
    • Experience in estimating weights for new and/or revised structure, bulkheads, and foundations.
    • Collaborate with material specialists to select suitable materials for shipbuilding projects, considering durability, weight, and cost-effectiveness.
    • Implement stringent quality control measures during the construction phase to maintain adherence to design specifications and regulatory standards.
    • Evaluate and propose structural modifications or improvements to enhance ship performance and operational capabilities.
    • Collaborate with naval architects to integrate structural design elements seamlessly with overall ship design.
    • Ability to create Independent Government Estimates (IGEs) for work packages.
    • Calculate Weight and Moment Tables for displacement and balance information on new drawing packages.
    • Provide technical support in developing and reviewing design drawings, ship specifications/design requirements and reviewing contract data deliverables for vessel acquisition and construction contracts issued by PMS 385.
    • Manage shipyard deliverable reviews and responses. Ensure technically sound analysis is performed, and responses are provided to meet contractual deadlines. Provide evaluation of technical requirements conformance for shipyard deliverable.
    • Provide engineering analysis of technical studies, reports, plans, procedures, and processes as they relate to ship design elements.
    • Provide technical support to the program office for reports, briefs, point papers, contract documentation and responses to industry queries regarding ship design engineering issues and corrective actions. Maintain configuration of Ship/Performance Specification and other program documentation.
    • Identify risks and provide analysis of emergent issues to include recommendations for risk mitigation and/or resolution.
    • Support the Configuration Control Board process and provide technical review and analysis of proposed changes. Identify documentation requiring revision or updates as a result of new or modified designs.
    • Support Trial Card / Discrepancy Management efforts including the preparation of technical assessments of deficiencies that are documented from Builder's and Acceptance Trials.
    • Possibility of travel to locations outside the typical office setting for interaction with customers, vendors, shipyards, and stakeholders, including ship visits and onboard site checks.

    Qualifications & Clearance Requirements

    Education, Work Experience, Skills and Clearance Requirements:

    • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field
    • At least 5 years of relevant experience.
    • Proven ability to solve complex engineering design problems
    • Must possess strong organizational and time management skills; the ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks simultaneously; exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with an emphasis on providing good customer service; highly self-motivated and resourceful with strong problem-solving skills; and exceptional attention to detail.
    • AutoCAD experience
    • MS Office suite skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiarity to support progressing and presentations
    • Active Secret security clearance verifiable in DISS or the ability to obtain one

    Preferred:

    • At least 10 years of direct experience working in or supporting NAVSEA, Military Sealift Command, construction shipyards, and/or operating/maintaining a vessel.
    • Prior military, maritime, or Marine Engineer background.
    • Experience with Auxiliary Ships
