Structural Ironworker installs girders and columns to provide a structural framework. May fabricate and assemble iron and steel materials. Being a Structural Ironworker ensures proper placement and alignment according to blueprints and instructions. Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Additionally, Structural Ironworker typically reports to a supervisor. The Structural Ironworker works under moderate supervision. Fabrication/erection is required to include certification or able to be certified in GMAW, SMAW and FCAW.
Must be able to read blueprints, operate customary shop equipment (Ironworker, band saw, cold saw, mag drills, various welders and forklift), work unsupervised performing layout, cutting, fit up and welding in various sub components to form finished structural members such as columns and trusses.
Math skills are essential in eliminating waste.
