    Music Department

    NNU Department of Music offers degrees in Bachelor of Arts, Music Education, Applied Music Emphasis, Worship Ministry, Musical Theater, and Commercial Music. Our comprehensive curriculum covers theory, history, methods, and applied coursework. Students at NNU participate in various ensembles and receive private instruction from our esteemed faculty and professional musicians from the Treasure Valley, many of whom are members of the Boise Philharmonic Orchestra. The building offers practice rooms, ensemble rehearsal spaces, an iMac-based Center for Digital Media, and an on-site recording studio. On-campus performances are held in our state-of-the-art Brandt Center’s 1500-seat hall, along with three intimate recital spaces. The department frequently hosts the state music conference and other festivals and events. Our ensembles perform both locally and across the Northwest, as well as internationally. NNU has a beautiful array of pianos in practice rooms and performing halls and is close to receiving the “All Steinway School” designation.   


    Description of Position

    The Faculty, Director of Choral Activities position is a full-time, nine-month tenure-track position beginning as early as February of 2024. This includes directing the renowned NNU University Choir (an 80-member auditioned ensemble that collaborates with the NNU Symphonic Orchestra to create the University Choir and Orchestra), as well as teaching needed classes within the Department of Music. 


    Essential Functions


    Recruit and Direct the University Choir:

    • Lead recruitment efforts to attract talented and committed vocalists.
    • Direct and oversee rehearsals, performances, and other choir-related activities.
    • Work with voice faculty to conduct auditions for ensemble placement. 
    • Work closely with the director of the NNU Symphonic Orchestra to maintain the University Choir and Orchestra project.


    Cultivate Relationships with Local High Schools and Churches:

    • Establish and nurture working relationships with local high school choral directors, choral ensembles, and individual singers.
    • Plan and prepare a regional tour focusing on enhancing church-university relations and recruitment.


    Support Vocal Studios and Music Department Culture:

    • Attend and assist in adjudicating end-of-semester vocal juries for students in the vocal program.
    • Foster and maintain collegial relationships with all vocal instructors, affiliates, and other department members.
    • Actively engage in collaborative projects and initiatives with other faculty members within the Department.
    • Teach courses that reflect the needs of the department and areas of specialization. 


    Requirements

     

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Candidates with extensive teaching experience 
    • Experience conducting at the collegiate, community, or professional levels
    • Earned a Master of Music Degree focusing on choral music from an accredited university
    • Evidence of leadership potential (e.g., positions held and experience with recruiting and building programs)

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Choral conducting with three (3) or more years of college teaching experience (graduate teaching assistantships with substantial teaching responsibility acceptable)
    • Evidence of established leadership (e.g., positions held and evidence of recruiting and building programs)

    Additional consideration will be given to candidates with:

    • Experience teaching courses within the music core
    • Experience conducting choral/orchestral repertoire suitable for undergraduate voices.
    • Ability to teach in a related area (choral methods, diction, or other areas of specialization).
    • Experience in the music direction of theatrical productions 
    • Success teaching music at the K-12 level
