Textbook Manager manages the textbook department of the campus bookstore. Purchases the necessary texts for university courses, makes pricing decisions, and keeps track of inventory and sales. Being a Textbook Manager develops textbook buy back programs and return policies. Supervises the preparation and return of overstock and defective books. Additionally, Textbook Manager may lead and direct the work of others. May require a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a bookstore manager. The Textbook Manager supervises a small group of para-professional staff in an organization characterized by highly transactional or repetitive processes. Contributes to the development of processes and procedures. To be a Textbook Manager typically requires 3 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor.     Summary:

    Under the direction of Director of Business Development and Guest Relations, will manage the operations of the college retail distribution center including the management of craft inventory, shipping of all craft products and e-commerce orders from both the Log House and the Visitor Center, and receiving of all merchandise for the Log House and the Visitor Center. Work directly with faculty, staff, and vendors as a primary liaison for textbook acquisition on campus. Manage the daily accounting and the budgets for both retail stores. Provide guidance to a large student labor staff.

    Minimum Qualifications Required:
    Education required to ensure success in this position:
    • Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in Business or related discipline.

    Experience required to ensure success in this position:
    • Minimum of 3 -5 years of Retail Management or warehouse management. Experience in textbook or book acquisition a plus.

    Special skills, knowledge and abilities:
    • Financial/budgetary principles, practices and procedures, particular to retail.
    • Understanding of POS (Point-of-Sales) technology and reporting capabilities
    • Understanding of inventory management and loss prevention in a retail environment
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills
    • Strong interpersonal and team building skills
    • Strong training skills
    • Demonstration of broad visioning, as well as detail orientation
    • Excellent computer skills, proficiency in Excel is essential
    • Understanding of accounting principals

    License, certification, or registration necessary:
    • Valid Kentucky driver’s license

    Physical requirements:
    • Need to be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
    • Need to be able to stand or sit for 3 to 4 hours at a time.
    • Need to be able to ascend and descend stairs and/or ladder
    • Need to be able to operate a telephone, computer and calculator.
    • Need to be able to drive college van and golf cart

    Environmental conditions:
    • Work done in a temperature-controlled office setting and warehouse.

    Ability to operate the following vehicles or equipment:
    • Fork lift (training provided by College)
    • College Van
    • Golf Cart

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.     • Accountability for daily financial reports of the Visitor Center and the Log House and oversee student accountants who prepare daily reports to ensure accuracy
    • Responsible for analyzing monthly budget reports of department and preparing budget projections for submission to Director of Business Development and Guest Relations and Vice President of Operations and Sustainability
    • Collaborate with the Manager of the Visitor Center, the Manager of Procurement and Visual Merchandising as well as the Associate Vice President of Student Craft on business operations.
    • Manages craft inventory and oversees labor students who provide inventory cycle counting at the retail stores
    • Effectively serves as liaison between faculty, staff and students and external textbook provider service.
    • Responsible for personnel administration of students including but not limited to hiring, training, scheduling work hours, and evaluation. Responsible for developing staff such that they contribute to a positive work environment and provide superior and accurate work.
    • Oversee the shipping department and ensure that students are well trained and accurate in shipping packages from the College.
    • Oversee the receiving department and ensure that students are well trained and accurate in their receiving of inventory into the retail stores.
    • Responsible for ensuring that the College is getting the best prices on corrugated shipping boxes and on shipping costs through one or more of the major shipping companies
    • In support of Berea College’s great commitments, this position requires student supervision. The fourth great commitment is to promote learning and serving in community through the student labor program, honoring the dignity and utility of all work, mental and manual, and taking pride in work well done. The Supervision would include scheduling, assigning and approving work performed. Developing students about common workplace acumen and giving them tangible work experience is an expected outcome.
