    Summary:

    This position is responsible for the day-to-day management of GEL’s sample and chemical waste processing operation.

    Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Train and supervise technicians working in Waste Management to procedures specified for Hazardous Waste Small Quantity Generators by OSHA, EPA, DOT, NRC, FDA and GEL. Training must be documented by both written test and satisfactory performance as well as repeated at periods specified by the regulations for each.
    • Work with Project Management and Safety to coordinate hazardous inbound samples.
    • Work with Purchasing and the laboratory groups to coordinate chemical disposition.
    • Document and identify all EPA hazardous waste streams in the laboratory and ensure both OSHA and EPA procedures are being followed and documented.
    • Document and identify all NRC regulated waste streams in the laboratory and ensure OSHA, EPA and NRC/SCDHEC procedures are being followed and documented.
    • Assume both inbound and outbound responsibility for FDA requirements surrounding Foreign Soils.
    • Meet with Safety team daily to coordinate both hazardous and radiological issues.
    • Coordinate the shipping and transportation of hazardous and radiological material (Samples and Waste) from GEL in accordance with DOT and SCDHEC regulations. This must be performed using vendors (TSDFs and Transporters) having proper certifications and approved by GEL on an annual basis.

    Typical Education and Experience:

    • Bachelor of Science Degree, with 4 years applicable experience preferred
    • Current certifications for DOT, EPA, OSHA and NRC would be a plus

    Other Knowledge Requirements:

    • Demonstrated organizational skills
    • Ability to multi-task with good time management skills
    • Fundamental principles, practices and techniques of chemistry are a plus
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Proficient computer skills, including but not limited to, WORD, EXCEL and other standard operating programs/systems
    • Employs meticulous attention to details

    Physical Requirements and Working Environment:

    The physical demands outlined are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job:

    • Mobility to work in a laboratory and warehouse setting
    • Use of standard office and lab equipment and stamina to sit or stand for extended periods of time
    • Able to routinely lift 50 lbs., stand on feet up to 10 hrs., use of both hands, lift and reach overhead

    Work is performed in a laboratory setting which is subject to chemicals, and potential fumes, gasses, noxious odors and related items typical for this environment.
