  • The YMCA of Columbia, SC is searching for a dynamic, cause-driven leader to serve as Sports/Wellness Director for its Downtown Branch.
    Job Description

    The Sports and Wellness Program Director supports the work of the YMCA, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. This position directs Wellness and Sports activities at the Downtown YMCA.

    Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s Degree or commensurate work experience, including sports programming and fitness management.
    • Group fitness certification through a nationally recognized and/or accredited organization (YMCA of the USA, ACE, AFAA, ACSM, etc.) preferred.
    • Previous leadership experience in recruitment, training and supervision of staff and volunteer groups.
    • Strong leadership and excellent customer service skills.
    • Ability to direct programs, achieve budgets, and fundraise.
    • Excellent personal computer skills and experience with standard business software.
    • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
    • Excellent problem-solving, organizational and communication skills.
    • Ability to establish and maintain collaborations with community organizations.
    • Must complete of the following trainings within 30 days of hire: Child Abuse Prevention training; CPR/First Aid/AED/Oxygen certification; Bloodborne Pathogens training and Sexual Harassment.
    • Must have the ability to travel between multiple job sites.
    • Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule, particularly evening and weekend hours.
    • Work hours may vary according to the program needs.
    Essential Functions
    • Develops, implements, and manages strategies to promote Y Wellness and Sports programs to meet the YMCA’s objectives.
    • Hires, trains, supervises and supports staff and volunteers in assigned areas. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Fosters a climate of innovation and resolves problems to ensure member/participant satisfaction.
    • Upholds the YMCA Mission and demonstrates behaviors that reflect a determined, nurturing, genuine, hopeful, and welcoming nature. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
    • Ensures high-quality activities through innovative program development, evaluations, and ongoing training of staff. Sets the standards for exceptional customer service.
    • Directs and supervises program activities to meet YMCA objectives. Expands sports programs within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
    • Secures and schedules athletic fields and/or facilities. Transports and sets up equipment for games and practices; monitors and purchases necessary sporting equipment as budget permits.
    • Creates teams from paid and financially assisted registrations. Organizes and conducts orientation meetings, and training and meetings for coaches.
    • Develops and distributes team practice and game schedules; trains and schedules sports officials and supervisors; develops and distributes sports rules, guidelines and handbooks.
    • Purchases and distributes team uniforms and awards; coordinates and distributes team photographs.
    • Establishes, organizes and conducts sports clinics and summer sports camps.
    • Schedules group exercise classes, staff and class rotations.
    • Oversees goals and schedules for Personal Training staff and activities.
    • Oversees fitness attendants and manages cleanliness and maintenance of workout equipment.
    • Assists in the marketing and distribution of sports and wellness program information, may organize and schedule program registrations. May review and process program scholarship applications.
    • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
    • Develops, manages, and controls departmental budgets to meet fiscal objectives.
    • Coordinates and manages communications with constituents.
    • Maintains equipment and facilities. Purchases equipment, parts and supplies as required. Coordinates and schedules equipment maintenance and repairs.
    • Leads special events as required.
    • Assists with the branch’s Race Series events.
    • Supports and leads fundraising campaigns and committees as assigned.
    • Assures compliance with state, local, and YMCA guidelines.
    • Provides data and reports as required.
    • Maintains annual training requirements.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
