Yard Jockey operates gasoline or diesel powered tractor trailer combination bringing trailers to loading docks to be unloaded. Backs trailer to loading docks, performs safety checks to secure trailer, opens bay doors, and assists dock workers in loading/unloading trailer. Being a Yard Jockey maintains radio or telephone contact with dispatcher to receive delivery or pick up instructions or to receive notice of changes in scheduled delivery or pick up. Typically requires a high school diploma. Additionally, Yard Jockey requires Commercial Driver License (CDL) - Class A. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Yard Jockey works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. To be a Yard Jockey typically requires 1-3 years of related experience. - Safely and efficiently operate yard trucks and other heavy equipment to move trailers and freight within the yard
- Perform pre-trip inspections of equipment to ensure proper functioning and safety compliance
- Transport trailers to and from loading docks, ensuring timely delivery and pick-up
- Maneuver trailers in tight spaces, including backing up and making sharp turns
- Secure trailers using appropriate methods, such as chocking wheels and connecting air lines
- Communicate with warehouse personnel to coordinate trailer movements and prioritize tasks
- Maintain accurate records of trailer movements, including trailer numbers, load information, and departure times
```Qualifications```
- Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with a clean driving record
- Experience operating refrigerated trailers, tractor-trailers, or heavy equipment preferred
- Knowledge of route driving and delivery procedures
- Ability to safely operate roll-off trucks is a plus
- Strong attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols
- Excellent communication skills to effectively coordinate with warehouse personnel
- Basic automotive repair knowledge for minor maintenance tasks
